Getting confused with feeding

Hi,

My 4 year old is currently on hi fi original, micronised linseed, brewers yeast and alfa beet. I feed her linseed to support her bare feet and add weight, and brewers yeast as she has sweet itch.

My 14 year old has a tiny bit of hi fi and tiny handful of topspec turbo mix (he has problems with motivating himself). He is a very good doer and has a tendency to get fat if he misses even one night of work.

My question is, would I be able to feed them both the same feed balancer to simplify feed time? And would I still need to feed the 4 year old these supplements or should a good balancer contain ALL that they need? Or do people not agree with balancers and go with all round vitamin and mineral supplements instead?

Reading around the topic and getting more and more confused :confused:

Thanks in advance

Balancer... vit and min supplement... potato pot-ah-to imo :). Whatever you feed, it ought to 'balance' the diet. For that reason I stick to true forage balancers such as Pro Hoof or one of the Forage Plus supplements. These are designed to balance a forage based diet in the UK (the mineral profiles are specific to typical UK mineral deficiencies).

Mine (5yo and 10yo) are just getting forage plus balancer in a blob of fast fibre, and nothing else but grass.

Yeah I'm getting soo confused between balancers and supplements! Does pro hoof work as an all round supplement as well? I just thought it was for feet!

Do you get the forage plus balancer at local feed stores or order online? And is it suitable for a horse in medium work as well?

Thanks :)

I buy them online. Pro Hoof et al are designed specifically to balance the diet of a horse in the UK (or anywhere with a similar mineral profile) fed mainly on forage, so they're an all round supplement. The magic is, that when you have a properly balanced diet with adequate and appropriate levels of all minerals - you get optimal hoof health. So good hooves are a product of a healthy balanced diet - which is what you want for any horse :).

They're suitable for all levels of work, but if the horse is sweating regularly (daily or almost daily) I would add electrolytes personally. But this goes for whatever supplement you choose.

I feed the Forage Plus balancer. It completely cleared up my boy's mud fever and his general health is excellent.
