Hang on in there. Horse hunting is horrible! I started looking last November and only found a horse in August of this year. I wanted a gelding around 10 years of age and have ended up with a mare of 14 years of age. I know it is a boring old cliche but he or she will find you. I'm sending you lots of positive vibes.

I would be wary. He's turned away so how can you try him properly and clipping his feathers to see how he behaves. Eh. Right.

Totally agree. You do not turn a horse away to sell it without a good reason a) it's mental b) something happened to it c) totally over horsed d) it's lame e) you found out you were 5 months pregnant f) any other bad reason you can pluck from the air.

Is is always difficult to find good reasonably priced geldings in the 7-10 age range as this is the popular age for people wanting to buy. Weight carrying sensible hacking horses also seem to be becoming more popular so you may just have to wait a bit until the right horse comes up for sale or be a bit more flexible with age ranges.

Are you on facebook? There appears for be a group called heavy horses for sale UK on facebook so might be worth looking if you have not already done so?

What about phoning the above people? They may have a horse that they are thinking of selling as coming to the end of the holiday season. If not, they may be able to tell you where they source their horses from and also pass comment as to whether or not your budget is realistic.

I should say that I haven't bought a horse via an advertisement for over 35 years; all mine come via word of mouth/speculative approach - the best way I find.

I haven't been following your search closely, apologies if this has been covered before, but have you considered an older horse? For example, aged 15 or above, maybe who is retiring from a more active life but still has plenty of go in them to be a happy hacker. Maybe with some mild issues like arthritis etc. My first horse and current horse were/are both like this, and weight carriers, I could never have afforded either of them in their prime, but what brilliant, safe, fun hacking horses they were/are.

He's rather nice. Is he broken to saddle?
My Clydesdale mare is 16hh, if you contact the British Clydesdale Society you could get a list of breeders. Find out which are the older breeders or breeders of the old fashioned working Clydesdale, they are smaller and show more quality,. There has been some out crossing to shires to increase height, noticeably any of American breeding.
