Hi,

I'd like to take my horse hunting this season and I was wondering what the best way of getting her fit is? She has been doing schooling, hacking and light competing (ODE) over the summer and she is a 9yr old TB.

Thank you.

I tend to use hacking to get mine fit, lot sof it with hill work.
Hill work really is fab, I owuld box my horse places if i didn't have them near me.
Just keep doing what your doing and increase slowly!
:)

agree with sugarmia - we do events during the summer and lots of hacking. September/October we work the hacks up to 2 hours and increase the amount of fast work and road work to get the heart and lungs fit and the legs hard.

hills are the key! ;)

Agree with the above. My boy is kept fairly fit through the summer doing unaffiliated SJ and lots of long hacks (2-3 hours at a time) Now it's September, I plan to increase his hill work and do a bit more canter work with him to prepare him for this season. :)

Seeing as she has been in regular work & competing all summer she should be fit enough for an early morning meet (good way of introducing her to hunting, a lot quieter), keep up with regular hacking too, even if you don't make it to an early morning i'm sure she would be fit enough for a proper day...just don't over-do it! Good luck :)
