Any advice on how to get more experience around horses/in the stables?? the riding school I take lessons at is in another council area so I cannot travel there due to covid restrictions (I live in Scotland) so I’m looking for someone in my area that would be willing to take on someone that just wants a bit more experience looking after horses, but I don’t know how to go about it...

for anyone in Scotland, I live in the Stirling area (near Callander) and would be grateful if anyone knows anyone who would be interested in helping me get more hands on experience :)

Hi Annie,

I do think riding schools are a great place to get experience as you will be around many different (safe) horses and the people teaching you should be knowledgeable. So it might be worth waiting a few months. Other than that you can put a post on a local Facebook horsey group and see if anyone wants any help - the danger there is you don’t know how safe/correct any advice they give you will be. You could also see if anywhere around you does any BHS stage 1/2 training although again you may have to wait a while. Remember there are loads of different Facebook groups and YouTube videos out there with tips about horse care/behaviour. Not as good as hands on experience but might help tide you over.

I know you can't get there right now, but when you can it might be worth asking your riding school if they'd have you as a 'formal' volunteer. That's what I did and now I spend six hours a week shadowing/helping the yard hand (not really sure what to call her, she's not the manager or an instructor but she covers all the day to day jobs). It's proving really useful (plus it's a free workout)!
