Hey so my pony is 7 years old and is green. She has hardly done any schooling and she does know how too get into an outline but it takes a while for her to actually drop her nose and when she does it basically comes straight back up again and this is defo too do with her inexperience! Was wondering if anyone had any tips or methods i can do whilst riding for making her better too at coming in an outline? Thankyou!

Get a great instructor :)

Thing is, its not about getting them to drop their nose, its about getting them to work from behind into a soft contact.

Someone on the ground explaining it to you as you ride is how you will both learn.

You have a lot of really big dreams - and that is great. Go for them. But do recognise when you might need some help on the way. Riding correctly in an outline is far more than holding the head. It also isn't something the pony "knows" how to do. She will either have the musculature and training for it - or she won't. It is not actually a natural way of going. If this is the mare you've been having problems getting into canter - or the one you want to get to POYS / Blue Chip etc - I would suggest you have a little way to go. A good instructor is really a must. But also perhaps a couple of lessons on a schoolmaster so you can feel what the movement should feel / look like so that it is easier to "explain" it to her. I see a lot of kids who think an outline is the pony's head carriage. It isn't - it comes from the hind.

You need to get her working correctly over her back & from her quarters first, once she's doing that the outline will come naturally. Don't worry about what the head is doing at the moment, it will all come in good time. Lessons with an experienced instructor will be of great benefit to both you & her :)

Excellent advice!

Thankyou! I know that i need too do that and i think i was a bit too vague explaining that i in fact want tips for every part of getting the horse moving properly and in an outline! Thanks again xx

Work on straightness and being able to
Move shoulders and quarters about independently - forget about the outline and work on getting the front and back end working thru ... the outline will come on its own
