My 10 week old puppy is doing really well and last night she had her second set of vaccinations so in 10 days she can start going for proper walks yay!

My vet also gave me a wormer for her, which she needs to have in a couple of days (as apparently might be a bit much with the vaccination as well) and it is a tablet.

I haven't wormed her yet (as the breeder did it just before I got her) and I am a first time dog owner so I have no clue as to how to get her to take this tablet?

Do I just pop it in her mouth and see what happens or are there a few tactics I can use? Reason I ask is (as well as me being a total numpty) she is not a particularly greedy dog, just eats what she needs, so Im not sure she will want it!

Dearie me I can worm a half tonne horse, but bring a 2.5kg puppy into the equation and Im useless!

Thanks in advance x

I had to give the little dog I was looking after tablets recently.

I lifted her head, dropped them in to the back of her throat, closed her mouth and waited until she swallowed.

However, it was actually easier and more pleasant for her to have them crushed up and mixed with some freshly cooked, warm chicken.

Gone are they days of small puppy mouths and having a hand half way down their throat ... out vets do chewable chicken flavour working tablets!! My 12 week old lab (at the time!) gobbled it down and was searching for more!!

maybe see if your vets has them?

none of my dogs like taking tablets so instead of fighting about it with them I just break it up and put it in their dinner or in a piece of soft cheese. If you can get them used to taking it normally then thats better but tbh I don't blame them, I hate taking tablets too!

We teach our dogs a "Mouth" command , we open open the mouth a put a favorite treat in there ans say mouth.. do this every day and you end up with a dog that will happily let you pop a tablet at the back of its mouth for tablets and a dog you can easily check back teeth :)

Also first time puppy owner so have tried- mushed in tuna in feed (all gone!), squished in cheese (ate cheese, spat out tablet, looked at tablet then ate it anyway) and these days? Cut in half (on big boy wormers now), dipped in tiny bit of butter, give to puppy who scoffs it. He's not especially greedy, but munches tablets like a good 'un.

Open her mouth and drop her head back once the tablet is in her mouth rub the under side of her neck this encourages them to swallow.

If you have a difficult on like mine, I hide the tablet in a bit of cheese :)

Thanks so much for all the advice.... I will work up the hierarchy and start with trying to put it at the back of her mouth with a treat at the ready! If that doesn't work I will try hiding it in something else. Unfortunately we are a family of marmite haters so I wont be buying a jar of that to worm her!!
