Im sure im not the only person but im really cheesed off that their are so many things i want to be doing on my mare and i cant :-( We have 2 7.5t at the yard that i cant drive due to licence and wouldnt drive anyhow! i can only really go to what ever the guys at the yard are going to (only 3 of us at the yard inc YO!) which is fine but they only do BE, BD and BS and i out the three will only do the BD but i really want to get her out on the showing circuit and its so frustrating with the amount of shows around us less than an hours drive i cant go to any because of no transport. No one is willing to take you unless they are taking their own or they can tow two etc which is FAIR ENOUGH!! I cannot afford a 3.5t box at the mo (dislike the thought of towing and i cannot afford the day to day running of a 4x4 with my milage!) i have just got a car on finance as my old car was past it, so i cant realisticly get a loan and mums bank is shut! just a really annoying situation! and iv seen a perfect little box for under 3 grand that would last me 12 months! arrggghhh!

eta- highlighting what clearly got missed out. i do not expect lifts just because the have transport! i am annoyed i cannot get my own!

its a 1.6 207 diesel sport! i wouldnt wana risk it. espec with motorways etc! i saw someone towing with a golf yesterday. a double trailer with a not so small horse. didnt look good! And unfortunatly i have to take a test also! unless i dragged someone along whos legal.
 
So go on then, why should someone like me who had to sacrifice all sorts of things to provide myself with transport feel duty bound to take someone like you who won't make those sacrifices to places, and worse why the hell should I have to justify myself to you why I don't want to take you out?
 
It is frustrating, but I waited many yrs until I bought my own transport.
It is hard to self fund this, and although I do offer lifts, I dont fancy taking other peoples horses and spending all day at a show when I could be on my own horse.

Sorry to sound harsh, but the other lorry owners dont owe you lifts and use of their transport.

Save up and hire, or wait / save and buy your own.

ps if your licence is post 1997, you cant tow a trailer either.

where in my post did i suggest i was annoyed at people for not taking me!! i dont think i did, i purely suggested i was annoyed that their are so many shows close by that i have no transport to get to! And my fellows liverys are more than happy for me to come along with them but UNDERSTANDIBLY which i believe i suggested in my OP, they do not want to go places where there is nothing for them to do!
 
I have gone through a time of not having transport and it is frustrating, I agree. But, if you have horses, you have to compromise. If you are committed and have the will power to save, that sounds like it is going to be your only option. Sorry :(
 
I have the will power to save but not the patience. i missed out all last summer due to my other horse being lame and now i have my new mare who is already 9 years old, i just feel she is being wasted doing nothing but school and hack and its getting me down abit. i just cant seem to get out of this run of bad luck with vets bills one after another which is putting even more of a strain on the saving process! 1 step forward and 3 back.
 
I am in exactly the same position as you - no transport, have a horse that I want to compete and has great potential....cant afford my own transport.

I consider myself VERY fortunate when a friend takes me out in her lorry....I more than pay my way, groom for her on days when I dont take my horse and care for her horse when she is working.

It is frustrating but I think you should consider that you are fortuante that you have people on your yard that offer to take you out as many people dont even have an offer of a lift.
 
oh yeah i realise i am fortunate and more than pay my way. i pay my half of diesel and groom for them when ever i dont take mine (i enjoy the day out aswell) it is only a small yard with only 3 of us and 7 horses so there isnt always room but im not fussed if for any reason i cant go as there is always another day but whats getting to me is i cant take her out to what i would like to. there is a show on monday i want to get her out to and get her used to the show environment but cannot as i cant transport myself, i would like to take her to lessons weekly aswell but i just cant scrape the money together to get a little box. and i daren't get a loan with my job as i work in a college i dont get paid for the summer hols! and if i dont find a decent summer job im stuffed as it were!
 
I stopped taking people to shows years ago because I gt sic and tired of it being 'expected' after a while. Even once before we got the disco and trailer, on the morning of the show, the lorry decided to spring a leak.

Of course, this was all my fault, and I had personally let everyone down...!

After that, husband put his foot down and refused to let me take anyone!

It's just me sis I take now, and the odd horse to the vets for someone if they are really stuck...

I only let myself down now then....can't be doing with the blinkin' hassle...

We saved long and hard t get transport for our horses....you make sacrifices to get what you want...
 
i was prety sure it was illegal to transport someone elses horses without a certificate anyhow, so can understand people who dont want to.
i dont really know what i can sacrifice, i dont have alot lol. i have my two horses. my semi retired tb and my mare, my car and thats about it! i work full time 9-5 4 days a week and full time uni and a sunday job, i do finish uni in 2 weeks so could realisticly take up a another job doing something for extra cash...
Ok so.. i am willing to work dam hard for what i want, i could try and apply for a credit card, i did hear one on the tv that had 0% for so many months or something along those lines, what ever it was it was a very good deal! my Gdads inheritance might come through sometime before 2012 (problems with will!) and i was planning on useing that toward it. so its doable, i guess im just worried about getting myself into problems.
 
It's a shame you had to get a car on finance, but I guess it's a cash flow problem right? I agree, not everyone has £800-odd hanging around to buy a lil run around.....car finances are renowned for stealing all your spare cash each month....a good £100 or so of that a month could be better spent towards saving for the box you want!
 
Is there no local transport firms. A lady I knew used to go regulary, it cost her about £30. Transporter would drop her horse off (she followed in her car) and leave her there and pick up later. If he wasnt busy he would wait with her so she got the use of the wagon for most of the day too.
Its cheaper than insuring and running your own if you do it once or twice a month.

Really? As I understand the DVLA and Directgov website (and i've re-read it about a million times), you can so long as both car and laden trailer don't come to more than 3.5t and the trailer doesn't weigh more than car. . . ?

I emailed them asking as I was puzzled by the letters on my card and paper and my emailed reply was:

"The holder of a full car (Category B) licence would be able to tow the following combinations:

If your car weighs less than 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM) you are able to drive a combination weight of 3.5 tonnes (i.e. a car of 2.5 tonnes towing a trailer of 1 tonne). In this instance the laden weight of the trailer must not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle.

If your car weighs exactly 3.5 tonnes MAM you are able to tow a smaller trailer of 750kgs.

If you would like to tow a larger trailer you will need to contact the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with a view to booking a test for category B+E."
 
my old car was costing an abolsute fortune to run as it was so old so i got a 57 plate on finance so im saving money in the longrun as i have much cheaper tax, insurance and i only spend £20 a week of fuel in this one. i just worry about running out of money haha, sounds stupid but its my biggest fear with the animals etc. i cannot expect my mum to help out. I dont want an expensive/new box aslong as its safe so could realisticly pay it off fairly easily, i just worry about having a bad month of money and not having enough to cover everything! espec when i seem to have a vet bill through the door every fortnight for the last year!! or i could just sell the lot! might be easier tbh!

not that i know of, there may be some in the neighbouring citys about 30 miles away but i cant say i have seen anything advertised other than hire and im under the min age to hire. you have to be 25.
 
I feel your pain.

I work full time, run a 12 yr old car and have just one horse - how anybody affords more than one is beyond me!!

I'm presently agonising over whether I buy a cheap 7.5t lorry for around £3k and do my HGV lessons and test next year (and, gasp, actually charge Mum & Dad for wanting to use it as a motorhome! Incidentally they pay noting toward my equestrian habit, so why not charge them?!!) or whether to go with changing an ageing car for something that will pull a trailer. I'm going to have to change the car eventually anyway! But I'm in the same position - the car would have to come on finance, not something the boyfriend will knowingly let me do, being the worlds most sensible person with money!!
 
I have had my horse 5 years this year and it is he first year we have been able to start getting out and about. From buying my horse and spending all my spare cash to keep him fed and watered. I have only just managed to set myself right financially. I have been hiring a lorry to take me out and about at £100 a go!! NOT cheap. So i am lucky if i go out once a month! The transport lady does try to pair me other with her other clients whom want to go to the same shows, so we can take the cost 50/50, but not always possible.
Over the past five years i have had the odd lift here and there from people to get out and about but would no means expect other people to take me. I have only asked for a lift once from one other lady on the yard, that was only because my horse had to get to the vets for emergency.
I understand how frustrating it is to not be able to get out and about, but if i had half the people offering me lifts to shows as you have i would be VERY grateful and just happy to go when i could.
 
It's rubbish isn't it, i'm desperate to get out and about with the baby hoss but the only girl who does anything at our yard does BE which is perhaps asking a little much of him :p and i would feel bad asking her to take me somewhere.

But hey-ho perhaps one day i will have my own transport :D
 
OP, I feel your pain!! I've got no transport either and got fed up with people letting me down when it came to bringing me to shows so this summer, I said s*d it, I'm going to hack to them. OK, some that I REALLY wanted to go to are too far to hack so can't go to them, but I found a show 10 miles away that will take us 3 1/2 hours to hack to and the another that is 6 miles away. I'm actually looking quite forward to hacking to the shows as it will be a good warm up.

I'm 35 and have given up on the idea of learning to drive as I can't afford £100 a month in lessons and I've had 100 lessons in the past and was nowhere near test standard so that should be a hint that driving isn't in the cards for me. Plus, although I would be able to scrape enough money together to buy a trailer, we can't afford the running costs of a 4x4 to tow it so hacking to the odd local show is the only answer.

Hope you get to find some local shows that you can hack to so at least you can get out and show this summer!
 
It is a rubbish pain in the bum.

I saved really hard and took my B+E test. It cost me £1000 pounds.

Now I have to start saving all over to buy a trailer and a car to tow it with. It isn't easy being young. Especially as we also have to consider buying houses. Which isn't as easy as it used to be.

I envy (not in a horrible way) people who could just buy a lorry or trailer and go, and people who didn't need at least a 20% deposit of £200,000 to buy a house and who went to uni without a student loan.

I agree with this^^

I am TOTALLY fed up with people trying to borrow my transport, cadge lifts etc etc...

I have not got an operators licence, therefore I am NOT insured to transport other people's horses for hire or reward, and why the hell should I??? I have worked very hard and for very long hours to be able to afford to buy transport, so maybe you should too?? or hire as and when needed??

I have had 3 people ask to borrow my transport last weekend - NO consideration AT ALL to the fact that I might be taking my own horses to the show.....now that's what I call cheeky and selfish - RANT OVER.:mad:
 
I've been around horses for 35+ years as has my wife. We never had any transport all those years ago & any shows we went to could only be reached by hacking. 35 years on, I no longer ride, wife still does but daughter is heavily into riding & competing. We bought an old trailer did it up & used it for a few years. Then bought a more modern trailer but sold it about 3 years ago & bought a 7.5 ton Tristar. It didn't cost a fortune but for us it was alot of money.

As a family we are totally committed to our horses & competing. We don't really do anything else. No holidays, meals out (except birthdays), evenings at the pub etc etc etc. Our money pays for the horses, entry fees, diesel & lorry running costs etc.

Since having the lorry I have not taken anyones horse to shows, if you take one then there is difficulty refusing another. People can also start to take it for granted that you will take them to the next show etc....I don't want to go down that route, it can cause illfeeling. Everyone knows where we stand & what our views are & that is fine. They all know however that if their horse needs to go to vets etc my lorry would automatically be available to them.

Basically it took me 35 years to get to the position I am in now, we couldn't compete then like my daughter can now. My daughter appreciates everything we do for her which makes it all worth while.

We recently moved to a nice small yard. There are only 5 horses there & all owners have transport so now there are no pressures of asking for lifts.

Sometimes you have to work hard, save & wait years to achieve your goal. It's taken us alongtime but we've finally achieved it.....our own transport! :)
 
I don't have my own transport and there are lots of people on my yard who do and often attend some of the same things I would like to go to and have space but I don't expect them to take me, why should they? I do know that if i had a vets emergency and my normal transporter could not come at short notice then someone from the yard would take me.

Life is not always fair there will always be people who are richer but not through their own hard work who have inherited money or married to someone rich or who's parents pay for everything my yard is full of them. It is better to accept this rather than waste time get frustrated.

I am lucky as I can hack to quite a few shows and dressage. If you are desperate to compete could you look at moving to another livery yard either within hacking distance of show or perhaps which run their own shows which might have more liveries who perhaps also do not have their own transport and might like to share with you the hire costs. I hire transport with a driver and it costs me between £100-180 a time depending on distance and how long I am at the show for. I can afford to do this about 6 times a year.

If you really want to compete are there any areas of your life you can save in? Could your horse live out at grass - mine does and this saves roughly £75-£100 a month. Could you get a sharer for you mare, before I got my pony when I was sharing I paid £130 a month for 3 days and did all the chores on those days.

If you want lessons is there no-one who could come to your yard to teach you?
 
Hey, at least you actually have a horse...;)

Don't be tempted to put a towbar on your car though, when you crash it will cause a dreadful hold-up as they scrape you, your horse and anyone unfortunate enough to be in your way off the tarmac!:eek:

wouldnt even dream of it!! makes me cringe! im not a huge fan of towing in general and wouldnt feel comfortable towing on the motorway.
 
OP I feel your pain. I'm in the same situation but with the added complication that my horse won't travel with company so I can't even get lifts with people going to the same place. It cost me £100 plus diesel to hire a box to get out for one day to get out and about this weekend with the panic that it looked like the friend I was riding with wouldn't be able to make it at the last minute.
I so need a 4x4.
