I was just wondering how people get rid of their muck heaps, we only have a small amount of space and have offered the rotted stuff to friends but they say yes but never turn up to collect it.
Any ideas? I see some people sell it on the road but do people sell much?

I am very lucky in that I have a guy take it away who has an allotment but before that it was a nightmare and very expensive.

I think the problem seems to be that you officially need a licence to cart the stuff away and finding someone is really hard. All the farmers around my way don't want it.

Try freecycle, realcycle or whatever your local group is.

I have a couple of allotment holders who fetch what they want and if the mound builds up I put a freecycle notice up and people fetch whatever they can carry - sometimes four bags in a car boot - sometimes a trailer.

For the allotments we have flexi tubs -poo is picked straight into them and then they go on the van and get tipped out the other end.
This saves a lot of shoveling.

My 4 are on wood pellet bedding, so I muck out into a skip rather than a barrow and tip it straight into empty alfa-a sacks that I put outside the gate with a sign saying Stable Manure, please take and please return bags for refilling.....

It's always gone when I get home - so no muck heap. The only problem is that the bags take some time to come back; I'm only limited by the amount of bags I have available since I get 2 bags a day when they are in, but if I don't have any bags I just spread the muck on the surface of the garden to suppress the weeds.

Don't over fill the bags - you want them to be not too heavy for people to lift and carry, and that they can close the tops off if they are taking them away in a vehicle (the postman's van must really stink!)

Also you could try contacting the local gardening club to let them know you are putting out manure - the gardeners go mad for it!

Our farmer provides us with 2 trailers that we rotate.
He removes our muck heap, but we do allow him to take the hay off one of our 4 acre fields in return - which we wouldn't use as it's an old lay and very fine meadow hay, plus we don't have the storage.
We suspect he may be claiming farming subsidy on the acreage too - but we don't mind :-)
