My 5 year old gelding developed a sarcoid last year on his back hock. It has never affected him in any way so the vets advice was just to leave well alone. He has recently developed a lump in his girth area which is starting to look like it is a sarcoid too. Obviusly this means I can't ride him as his girth will rub the area. My friend mentioned that the Vet should be able to band it to get rid of it. Has anyone had this done? Does it work? I am a bit worried that it will then just grow back. Does anyone have any other suggestions for how I should treat it?

I used something called Blue Merle and was really impressed with the results. My mare had a golf ball sized sarcoid on her chest which has completely disappeared and has not come back (this was three years ago). It is a liquid that you give orally every day for five days, then nothing for five days until the bottle is empty. The sarcoid looks like nothing in happening then a "layer" comes off (think of an onions layers!) and it looks bloody and horrible. Then it hardened up again, this kept repeating until it had gone, I think I used two bottles. I was recommended it by my vet, I think the company are near Stoke and it was about £15 a bottle. I am at work so can't check ATM! PM me if you want more details. I should also say, there is no mark where the sarcoid was.

Look at the Prof Knottenbelt website for more info about sarcoids - he says that the only predictable thing about them is they are unpredictable! Some lumps look like sarcoids but aren't really. That's one reason you hear so many stories like "I put cobwebs on mine & they disappeared". The other reason is there are lots of things that work for some sarcoids but not for others & nothing works for all sarcoids or even for all similar sarcoids. There is a long list of potential treatments from herbal to toxic creams & surgery. The best thing to do is talk to your Vet (but from experience I would say make that a specialised equine vet , not an ordinary vet) & they can make a more educated guess about the best treatment options. My mare has several sarcoids. 3 have had Liverpool Cream treatment & I am waiting for the scabs to come off to see if it has worked, 2 have had a combination of banding with an injection of Liverpool cream & the rest are being left alone. One warning about Liverpool cream - it's taking an age (3 months so far!) for the scabs to come off but I have been told in no uncertain terms not to "encourage" them off.
While I was waiting for the cream to treat the girth & saddle area lumps the Vet was happy for me to ride with a polypad & sheepskin girth sleeve.

My horse had a sarcoid on his belly and the vet put a band around it, it burst that day and fell off that night, it healed as i thought but when it came round to clip him if found the neck of it was still there.

he had one on his site but it was very very small and a band couldnt fit round it so i got bloodroot (xxterra) and applied it for 5 days and it made it swell, he got very agressive when i was putting it on (tryin 2 kick, which was so unlike him)
on saturday i took his rug of and his sarcoid had stuck to his rug and come off lol

well H had one on his belly and sinc it wasn;t near the girth i decided to try the camrosa treatment before getting the vet (i was a vet student for 4 years mind) used it for a good few weeks and it sort of helped, anyway after reading a few things here and there someone mentioned the NAF fly cream (white pot not black) as a treatment so i thought well why not can;t hurt, anyway said sarcoid is now gone! whether it was the camrosa, fly cream or just went on its own i have no idea but it has gone!

My horse had several round his sheath when I got him - he was six. He had the Liverpool cream treatment (this was quite a few years back) and they all dropped off leaving just some scars. He did not like the treatment - I think the second or so onward application starts to sting and so he used to try to kick which was not ideal but the actual treatment worked brilliantly.
