Getting sweaty travelling

Son's horse gets very sweaty traveling, even though we only do short trips. Yesterday I followed the trailer in my car & watched how he was. He seemed calm & was munching his hay but was literally dripping after a less than 20 min drive. I always travel him in a cooler to absorb the sweat but wondered whether that might be making him too warm.
He is a chunky fresian x cob with a belly clip. I wondered whether I should try a trace clip but want to keep clipping to a minimum as he lives out. Any ideas?
 
Id probably just give him a trace clip if you travel regularily. I wouldnt worry about him living out - I assume he has a decent rug anyway? I have 2 horses (one a Welsh Cob, other a Luso x TB) with hunter clips living out all winter and they cope perfectly.

Remember to keep his elecrolytes topped up.
 
His old owner came to visit today (we've had him 4 months). She confirmed he's always sweated very easily so I think it's the trace clip. TBH even standing in the field he sweats on a hot day. I don't think being black helps him cool down.
 
I'd go for at least a trace clip, maybe even a blanket clip if necessary. D lives out all year round and is blanket clipped at the moment and will have a hunter clip soon. With the right number of rugs she keeps nice and toasty warm but doesn't get sweaty when ridden or travelled
 
I never rug for my thin skinned TB's to travel even in winter; they usually get warm and occasionally break a sweat, as traveling even in a lovely lorry and at slow speeds is still stressfull for them.

Make sure you've got all your vents and windows open, and ditch the cooler; just make sure you are ready to rug at the other end as needed.
