Ahhh so here we are again - actually took her out for a cheeky first show a few weeks ago but it didn't really warrant a report, having no pictures etc, hehe

Can't help but have a sense of impending doom at this point. In 2014 Millie came back from injury around this time of year, got *ready* to do a show and then got injured on the gallops.
In Spring 2015, she was back to fitness, actually went to a show, qualified for regionals and then came in from the field on 3 legs.
In spring 2016, she has gone to *2* shows... and I'm waiting to see what's going to go wrong THIS time! At least I've got Kira-the-spare now.

So yesterday was D-day - I decided at the last minute to get some late entries to Kings and do our first Advanced Medium. This was a bit foolhardy and Adam laughed at me earlier in the week when I took M for a lesson as we only get a decent change about 10% of the time, but at least at home they are usually civilised and on the aids, even if they are often half a stride late behind :o AM was becoming something so enormous in my mind, I knew if I didn't just have a go then I'd always be too afraid, and actually doing it when I know the changes are rubbish takes all the pressure off. Well that's my logic and I'm sticking with it.

Anyway, off we went for a go round Medium 76 to try and get our regional points, and AM 91. Both of them are new tests for this year so unhelpfully there are no videos on Youtube to study  Couldn't remember either of them to save my life and both read like awful floorplans so I didn't have high hopes at all!

Arrived feeling sick and with both arms and legs weak and basically non responsive. Haven't felt that nervous since I quit eventing! The nerves melted away when I got on and warmed up for the medium. Had a super ride round, which really surprised me as last time I rode Millie in the indoor at Kings she dropped me. Just felt like she was a bit down in front and over reacting to my half halts, so there were some jerky moments but very very happy to get 70%. Mission accomplished - silver Medium regional qualification done.

Short pause for me to re-learn AM91 which had fallen out of my head by then. Millie felt responsive and on the aid in the warm up, the changes weren't *good* but they were straight and under control, and on demand - that would do nicely. The test started well.... got one change, next was about 10 metres late, the one after the extended canter was late behind and then it all unravelled! :D M went on strike and then had a nap down the centre line, ho hum! I always knew it would go a bit green but never mind, we managed to pull it all together and finish, to a round of applause from the gallery. nice to provide a bit of entertainment :p
Pleasingly, the rest of the work was good enough to compensate for the 4, 3, 2 and 1 (yes, we got a 1!! not sure we even deserved that tbh) received toward the end of the test for 64% overall and first in my section.

Proof that there is a change!

Still under control at this point, too

So altogether a positive experience, and surely the worst is now out of the way - I won't every be afraid like that again and we weren't last, nor eliminated, nor bolted with, and I didn't fall off  Plus, it had the side-effect that I hoped for, which was to motivate me to ride the Mediums with more focus - it's all to easy to tootle round quite sweetly when you have a horse that goes in a rhythm and can go sideways. But I need the challenge of something really hard to make me up my game, think more, ride better & get the scores Millie is really capable of.

Kira is out & about again on Friday to see if we can get her qualified for regionals too, and then Millie goes to dressage camp at the end of April where we *WILL* nail those bleeding changes! Assuming another leg doesn't fall off, of course...

WOW well done absolutely fabulous results, and yes I'm including the AM result, 64% which those scores in the middle is cracking :D. Glad you're showing us how to do it :D, and keeping everything crossed that all legs stay on and undamaged!!!!

Well done, lots to be really happy about.

Clearly not letting her know that you have a plan and surprising her with shows is the way to go!

Are you still riding/competing the grey spanish horse, Armadeus(sp)?

She looks awesome! So relaxed and soft!

What a sweet comment at the end as well, wish more judges were that kind! :p

I haven't watched the videos yet but sounds like a great outing despite some things going wrong. And I'm sure the rest of the AM test was brilliant to reach 64% so there are lots of positives to take away from it.

Looking forward to seeing more reports featuring the lovely Millie. Who is the dressage camp with?

Lol not sure this is QUITE how you're supposed to do it, but it is fun :D

No, life has intervened and I stopped riding him last year so just my 2 girlies now :)

Well done! Lovely test for the medium and the good bits in the AM must have been great to pick up the final score like that.

Thanks :) I was pleasantly surprised by how well the rest of the test rode, got some 8s and 7.5s so all quite promising :)

Well done! Sending vibes that no more legs fall off.

We need all the vibes we can get, lol

We used to get slated by her way back in millie's novice days, so all the sweeter at this level ;)

Just remember any horse can break, so enjoy the ride

^^amen to that!

Yep and this was with her being in season too, so very happy with her efforts , despite everything :p

Camp at AM dressage, love them and always come away feeling inspired :)

Rest of the test must have been super to get that score with those marks! (will watch videos later. I'm still dead chuffed to get over 60% at AM. Monts managed to win 98 on sat on our first go at it with 66.3% and 7's for all his changes. I'm still in shock!

Wow! She looks fantastic! Very in awe of anybody competing at that level, especially with those scores. I think we're doing well to get over 60 when we step up a level.....

Thanks everyone :) quite pleased with the old bat and looking forward to having another go when we feel a bit more prepared :)

Brilliant result, and I saw your thread about the tails... very jealous! I've got some languishing in the cupboard from my eventing days and I'm absolutely desperate to be able to wear them again one day! :D

Sigh. So green with envy. But stoked that Millie is back. Don't think about things going wrong. Think about them going right! And 64% at AM is hardly to be sniffed at. I'll be happy when we can canter a circle again, let alone ping in a flying change.

Oh I remember that feeling :/ I thought the last time she broke that we'd be into early retirement and I was totally heartbroken. It's really nice having a spare this time because I haven't been anywhere near so frustrated during all the rehab (and the spare has turned out to be loads of fun anyway).

Those are fab results! I'm glad she's back :)

I am jealous that you have the confidence to go out at a level where movements aren't 100% all the time, and still get a brilliant score! I'm too much of a wimp/Ocd person to enter a level where I know we aren't established in the extra movements!! Eg. We can do changes, collections etc. and a half pass in canter - but because I can't quite get the hang of half pass (have developed a mind fart about it!) in trot I don't want to move up!
Grr stupid mind :p

Hehe it's something that I was discussing at my last lesson. I did Novice without having a proper medium trot. and started Medium with decidedly dodgy walk pirouettes. I started Kira at BD when we could just about steer round the arena in canter...

Doing that AM test is the best thing I've done in ages for my riding, because it made me focus on doing *everything else* (there are 35 scored elements in AM91, and only 5 of them are changes) absolutely the best that we possibly could. Made me actually twig that AM isn't actually a level that's all about changes, it's just the first one where they appear, and all the normal stuff is still just as important. Rather than tootle round for a 6, actually ride all that other stuff for an 8 (and get some)!

A watershed moment for me - I'm the sort of person that needs those challenges to progress :o She was only just out of Novice points under the old system, but where's the fun in that  I'm not afraid of looking a wally, and most people at affiliated shows will have had one of *those* days anyway so we're all in the same boat :) I say give it a bash if you want to.

We still don't have a medium trot, let alone an extended one. We do have fab changes though so I skipped Medium and went straight to Advanced Medium and we've scheduled our first Advanced. I know we won't get a wonderful score and our 3time changes may or may not happen but it's fun and I like a challenge! PSG next year fingers crossed!

Hi, so pleased Millie is back competing, she's looking great. I'm doing the 5 day camp in May and really looking forward to it but just a teeny bit nervous as Adam found Mr B for me and I just hope he likes how he's going as he's not seen him for 2 years.
Camp at AM dressage, love them and always come away feeling inspired :)
