Getting two new puppies..

Well at Badminton yesterday I think we spent more time looking at all the dogs than the horses! And we decided that we deffinately wanted a whippet, but dad also wanted another JRT...so last night we decided that we would get both

So a few questions..
Would a whippet and a JRT get along well?
Would it be best to get them both at the same (ie. same day)?
Where do we go about looking for them?!

Have seen an ad for some whippet puppies that mum is going to phone up about today, and then we are going to phone the kennel club as apparently they can point us in the right direction, but what about jack russels?! As they are not a kennel club breed? We got our last JRT through a friend, and we don't know of any for sale at the moment?

We would deffinately like to get them sooner rather than later.

Ideally we want a blue and white whippet, and a black, tan and white JRT

I've always been told NEVER to get two puppies at the same time - many responsible breeders refuse to let two pups go to the same home. Puppies, when kept together often form very strong bonds with each other, leaving you out of the equation. You see it all too often, you're just there to provide the food and the pups feel they only need each other. You can end up with horrendous behaviour problems which are very difficult to avoid.

The best way to do it to get one pup, wait until that one is at least 12 months old, then get the second.
 
It depends whether or not you and your family have the time to put in to two pups at the same time, both will be demanding and, having kept two from the same litter recently, it is hard work. That said it is possible and if you all feel you can cope with that then go for it.

The two we kept, one is mum's one is mine, I trained mine and she trained her. Also I insited that Bridget did stuff without Pea and vice versa as I didn't want them becoming dependent on eachother. That's the trouble we had the first time we kept two from the same litter and they were a nightmare because they copy eachother and defy you till the end lol.

I think you'd be better going through the KC or breed club for a Whippet. Where the Jacks are concerned I think you'll have to go by your own judgement unless you know where it's coming from. I know someone in Peterborough who breeds them, I've used her male at stud twice, depends how far you're prepared to travel but I can give you her details if you're interested

Jack Russells go with anything, I have 3 JRs and 2 Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas, mum has 6 HWVs (I live at home still).
 
I, not knowing about not having two from the same litter, got a brother and sister. I have to say, apart from the nightmare of toilet training - which we still haven't got quite right - they have been fine. We have had to seperate them quite often - such as now whilst Bunny is looking after her babies - but they seem fine about it and not very co-dependent at all.

I have to say they have so much fun together when we take them out walking - it's such a pleasure to watch. They really make me laugh. So apparently ignorance is bliss and not knowing we were doing the wrong thing has turned out ok.
 
They are fine but if you have to watch if you have a male and a female together as you don't want accidental matings - no offence meant towards Nuala!
 
I got my black and tan in Dec 07 and my bitch in March 08. I have had no such problems with them, but do agree to have some kind of gap @ least - makes YOUR life easier if nothing else!
I had both my dogs from Epups. Here they are!

Wow WelshRareBit, your pups are gorgeous!!

I told mum about not getting two pups at the same time, so think we are going to try and have a gap- saying that, if we buy one and then see another that we really like then I don't think we will turn it down as it seems that tri coloured jack russels and blue and white whippets are the hardest to find!

mum and dad work from home so there is someone here 24/7 (unless we go out for the day..), so we have plenty of time to look after them

About a year between puppies is ideal. I know it sounds like a long time, but in a year you can make sure that the first puppy has a good recall, knows basic commands to be safe (like "wait" in the car until asked to jump out, which can be a nightmare with one person trying to handle two puppies!), and has bonded with you. As a one year old the first puppy will love a new friend to play with but will also teach him a lot of (good) things by listening to you.

I have to say I agree with other people's posts about not getting two puppies together and have seen a number of people struggle (when I used to help out with training classes). The puppies will re-inforce each other's behaviour (and, unfortunately, mis-dehaviour), they will have a safety zone in each other and may run off together, they will need a lot of work to make sure each one is confident with everything on its own, etc.
 
Contact the kennel club and ask for an accredited breeder!

As long as the dog are brought up together and both treated fairly etc then should be no problems but whippets will run run run and I woudl not advise letting it off in a public park etc untill you 100% trust it We had one come in the field and our chased it for over an hour until it crashed out!

Would advise getting a dog and bitch.


P.s Harriet and Yepa are great, I work for the BBC at Crufts and met the duo! Brought tears to my eyes when I watched her win! A real gem for the breed!

We own Yepa's sire.

Don't agree with the accredited breeders scheme 100%, having seen a local kennel and the bad state their dogs are kept in yet they're still "accredited breeders" - not impressed if the KC approve anybody. So I'd stick with contacting the breed club and asking their advice.
 
No - I don't think so. Mainly because if we have another I would really prefer a little girl. But also because I have seven cats, two dogs and three horses and I think that should probably be enough!!
