After more than 50 years, this will be the first winter that I will not have to get up at stupid-o'clock to do outside animals. I can feel the bliss already......

Two retired horses which live out at home and get checked as and when multiple times during the day and a lurcher who thinks he is a pure whippet and refuses to go outside in the rain, or in the dark if he can help it. We live in a small barn, it’s 20’ from bed to kettle and back again with coffee!

I'm absolutely appalling at getting up in winter. I despise it. However, I roll out of bed at the first alarm noise 7am, brew a flask of tea & fill hot water bottle & get going. I'm toying with getting him used to staying in a little later.

A daylight alarm clock is absolutely essential - it slowly gets lighter until its at its brightest at the time you set as an 'alarm'. It wakes me smoothly and pleasantly every morning with that feeling of sunshine in the room even on horrible days. I set a backup alarm when it's essential I don't oversleep but I never need it. I have a Philips version but there are others out there that are cheaper.

I am thinking of getting one of these.

I'm dreading winter, it's so depressing with the dark nights and mornings. I'm lucky with my hours at work as I finish at 3.30pm so I'm at the yard before it gets too dark but its vile when its dark when you wake up.

I can remember having to drive through a stretch on the M6 one winter at 6.30am on the way to working on a particular gruelling contract when there were narrow lanes due to road works, traffic management and a section of unlit motorway.

The trip to work was hell on earth, made worse by the fact it was so dark and gloomy.

As soon as any slight chink of ligh under the window blinds, I have 4 cockers on bed staring at me, one right in my face. Moment I open an eye I get unwelcome first face wash.. Willing to rent them out to help anyone wake up. At moment wake up time is 6:30 am. God help me when clocks go back. ??

All I need is a husky! He starts checking on me from about 4.15am so I have to pretend to be asleep. Then when the alarm goes off he comes racing into the room and jumps on the bed, looking far to enthusiastic for my liking. Shortly followed by the malamute who doesn't believe in leaping around, so just squashes me in a grumpy manner. Then I have to extricate myself and get out of the door with them by 5am...
