Riding up an incline is great for building up lots of muscle, in eventing you have 325 metres speed (steady canter) approaching drops steps into water etc, and 570 metres for on the flat, practise these speeds out hacking and nail em! Go on YouTube and type in eventing speeds and it should come up with some helpful videos. For fitness, lots of trotting builds muscle, go on "speedy" rides to interest him and get him fit and ready. I like to take mine to the gallops before a comp so I know they are ready. For jumping, gymnastic exercises like cavalettis and grids
