hey all,

well my new girl (piebald) arrived a couple of weeks ago. she came with a rather yellow stained tail which i cant get completely white. ave used some 'white horse' shampoo and then splashed out on some supreme products stain removing shampoo but its still yellow! (although it has faded!) is it simply a case of keep repeating or does anyone know of some magic trick to do the job?

thanks!!

I have a palomino and now a grey so i understand your problem well! my hairdresser gets me some shampoo that is purple. Its used to get nicotine stains out of grey and blonde hair. Loreal make it and its in a silver bottle (platinum I think)but i have never seen it in the shops. She gets it from her supliers but it works. You have to leave it on for a few minutes longer.

We have a hairdresser on our yard, andshe's going to try lifting the stain out with the stuff used by hairdressers to clear yellow stains....... We'll see how it works.

i have the exact same problem with my grey pony...was told by a friend to try bloo(think that is how it is spelt) toilet cleaner have not tried it myself yet but think i will as hibiscrub, washing up liquid and grey shampoo hasn't worked

I have a cob with a white tail and i use sterident denture tablets use about 8 tablets in hot water!! pop tail in bucket then swirl it about, leave in for 10 mins rinse out. It works a treat!

Arial excel gel mixed with washing up liquid - good old green fairy and very hot water. Wash well. Next take some equine blue which you can get from equineblue.com. Make up a strong solution in hot water, put tail in but not dock and soak for 10 minutes. Don't worry if tail is bright blue.

Rinse and now apply plenty of cheap conditioner and rinse once more.

The worst of the yellow should now be out. Next step it to keep it bagged - tailgator.co.uk. You may also find that if you apply some of their survivor detangler say once a week, this also helps to keep stains out.

My cob has such a long thick tail that it is bagged all winter and in summer, I leave the top third out and bag the rest.

A final good whitening tip is to apply zinc oxide powder the night before a show.

Finally some folks use a very thin solution of white emulsion on hair to get it white when all else fails - haven't' tried it myself but have heard of it on some showing circles.
