My boy is 5 year old warmblood- 17.1hh with a large shoulder and a wither, last year i had a made to measure saddle- which he is starting to outgrow now- it just wont be wide enough/!!

so im looking into the changeable gulleted saddles- for whilst he grows- to save me money in the long run, i tried the wintec isabell on him- which i didnt think it sat right even with the gullet changed- sat right behind the shoulder and dug in.

has anyone got any experiences of the new pds saddles by GFS- this one in particular??

Traditional beech laminate trees, whether spring or rigid, are actually slightly adjustable by a fitter/saddler. Not all are happy to do it - worth investigating whether someone would adjust your current saddle. Obviously if you work with a fitter who is happy to do this it opens up more options for you - I will always adjust the saddles I sell, up to a size or so in either direction and up to 3-4 times. Each tree IS handmade of course so it does depend, but I find that wooden trees can be more stable than synthetic trees and of course it means there are so many more options to help you find a saddle that fits your horse's particular shape.

Thanks sbloom, it is an option worth considering, but now I'm trying to 'do' different movements and alot of sitting trot, I find my current saddle doesn't help with keeping me stable. Also it's brown and I want to change to black
Thanks for your reply though sbloom :)

Hi, I have bought the GFS XCH Halfinger saddle for my impossible to fit Irish Draft mare in August last year and absolutely love it. She had been injured and we brought her back into full time work in August as a XXW fitting and I have just recently gone down a gullet size to the XW. Previously I had the saddle fitter out every three months (£50 per visit) and had two traditional hand made saddles both which were altered twice (£150 each time), so I am very happy with not only the fit and quality of the GFS but the saving I have already made.
Hope this helps.

I've had a similar prob finding a treed saddle for my RID mare as they also tend to dig in to the side of her withers. Have managed to find a wide seat Ideal Josephine saddle with the H & C tree which is wide enough across the shoulder but had heard the GFS XCH Haflinger saddle was a good fit for ID's so presume would also be good for a WB who too have large shoulders but have withers.
