I recently started riding a horse 2 times a week on a fairly informal basis (although I say this I always do the same days, always turn up and ride and poo pick etc so I guess not that informal). I don't pay anything because I was never asked to.

I quite often nosy through a local classified website and this morning I found an advert for this horse looking for someone to share 4 times a week for a contribution. That is all fine and fair enough but wtf not ask me/let me know first?! Maybe it is just me but personally I think that is kinda rude :(

i wouldnt say its rude as if it is an informal agreement you have already then not really, but the person could have been a bit more tactful and asked if you wanted to share the horse before putting an add up

I have been riding him for about 2 months, twice a week on set days, including doing all yard duties on those days so maybe I feel my role is less informal than the owner does? It seems a little shortsighted that I wasn't asked because I would have seriously considered it but now I feel too grumpy to entertain the idea. I will probably calm down later i guess :o

Is it possible that maybe the owner isn't happy with what you're doing with the horse, but is afraid to confront? Either way, it's silly cos s/he'd have to eventually if they got a new sharer??? But I do agree, it's rude. But then, most folk think I'm rude cos I say things fairly directly (eg, if I'm not happy about something, I face it head on rather than avoid).
