im beginning to hate hacking out on the roads now, 3 times now my horses legs have been clipped by a wing mirror, people just dont care, my horse is pretty safe on the road isnt really scared of anything but he does get nervous when cars, lorries or motor bikes get too close, but what really p****d me off was when someone was towing a trailer with a horse in came speeding past me?! whats that all about i thought they would be more respectful but obviously not, but i have had people beeping at me when my youngster was in obvious distress dancing in the road, and they are still getting close behind you beeping. its like what is wrong with you people?!

has any one else been in a situation like this?

Yes!! I took my youngster out for the first time alone on Friday, there was a sharp bend and the car came round the bend beeping, as they sometimes do to alert cars coming the other way, my boy started prancing about as the car was coming from behind us, car didnt stop to let me sort him out it just kept driving behind us (even though he went into a prancy panic canter along the road)! I pulled my boy into a driveway and the car also pulled into the driveway to let another car pass!! driver wouldnt even look in my direction for me to give him what 4!! Took my boy out the following day and he was reluctant to go round that bend :-( Wondered how he would have felt if he'd caused a accident, if I couldnt have stopped my boy he could have ran straight into the oncoming car!

its ridiculous but if one of our horses kicked their car we would certainly know about it, my youngster is nervous of going out now, he used to be really good and confident but now its an argument just getting out of the yard and i think its unfair people need to be aware that it isnt just bombproof horses on the road there are a lot of spooky or young horses and we shouldnt just stay off the road because of them!

I've noticed a huge difference in motorists since I've had a small break from horses. Drivers are alot more impatient now, and even if you ask them to slow down they will ignore you and speed past. We are lucky in that we have a drive opposite us that goes for approx a mile so tend to stick to that as hardly meet any traffic xx

we are on quite a quiet lane but when people come down there they come down there at excess of 60mph, the whole lane is blind turns you dont know what you'll meet on the other side whether it be a horse or another motorist, but the lane is national speed limit and it is only wide enough for one car its ridiculous put people seem to be getting more and more cocky when it comes to going past horses, and it wont be the first or the last horse that will get hit down that lane, and on the main roads they are just as bad, people need to respect their space i dont wear a hi-viz saying please pass wide and slow for nothing! x

It might be worth getting one of those 'polite' notice hi viz jackets, on first glance they look like police jackets so slows people down more. Worth a try anyway!

Also keep an eye on the legislation. I heard this morning that police will be getting the authority to issue on the spot fines for aggressive driving, rather than having to pursue the matter through court (with a bigger burden of proof therefore a more complicated process). So now, if you report a motorist and have independent witnesses, there should be nothing to stop the police from taking action.

Your horses legs being clipped by passing cars would be classed as an incident - and I recommend you report them to the police, along with the number plates of the cars who are colliding with you.

Do you ride with a babysitter horse for your nervous youngster??

PLEASE go onto this site and report it, the more we report such problems the more likely the government (lol can but dream) may realise there is a real problem with motorists in general. They are impatient, speed, think they are infallible, arrogant and very selfish to the core.
It makes me laugh, I saw the tv this morning about what one poster said earlier they are going to give out fixed notices for careless driving etc, HOW many traffic cops have you seen lately stopping people, in unmarked as well as marked cars?
I haven't seen one for ages.

The driving whilst using the mobile phone law is a joke too, everyday as I am sure most of you experience too, I meet loads of motorists yapping away on their hand held phone, no hands on the wheel driving, I saw one man with a Disco down a VERY narrow lane with a horse trailer on the back with 2 large horses in, plus a car full of kids yapping away on his mobile, beggars belief!
I can't wait to move to rural west wales and get away from the masses!
As Pedantic would say and they are quite right, Nation of Ars*holes.
Oz :)

I absolutelu couldn't agree more that motorists can be a nightmare these days - however, see my thread (I hadn't seen yours when I posted) called Grr horse owners!!

I'm not excusingf drivers behaviour but you can see how some might get annoyed at this sort of behaviour!! I have.

Although I have never been hit i have had a few very near misses so have come up with an invention which seems to be helping make people go a bit further out. I have bandaged my schooling whip with bright orange vet wrap and attached at the end a piece of bright yellow plastic tape (stuff you use to bury in ground to mark electric cables). My horse got used to it straight away and i ride with it stuck out into road. The difference was amazing! Cars actually went on other side of road instead of barely moving out at all! I will be taking it with me every time i ride out now!

If you or your horse comes into contact with a moving car then a RTC has taken place, the driver must by law STOP, tell any relevant person about the collision, provide their details to any person who may reasonably require them, and if nobody is around they must report it to the police as soon as practicable. Therefore if you are clipped by a car and they drive on note down the reg, time and location and report it to the police (NOT by 999)

I think it would be interesting to see if people who hack could use something like helmet cam (only instead of it facing forwards it faces backwards - or if there are more than 1 person hacking you could have 1 cam facing forwards and 1 facing backwards?).

That way if they are reported you have proof :)

Probably too expensive though :o

I think there is going to be a time when you find most riders, cyclists, motorcyclists and infact driversas well have to be camered up so as to prove what they are saying.I for one would have cameras in my vehicle if it meant a) I could prove that the idiot DID pull out in front of me and I am not lying as he said I was and b) It would give me a reduction in my insurance premiums. I drive as carefully as I can within the law so really have not got anything to worry about.

i have previously reported it to the police and they couldnt give a moneys if im honest they have all those yobs to sort out ;) but my youngster has my 10 year old good ol' reliable taz to go out with as he doesnt take any notice but she is getting attached, hence me taking her out on her own, she doesnt go far just different distances so it isnt habbit to turn around at a certain point, she is now going back out with taz but still makes a battle out of going out of the yard :/ but shes getting better, i might just try that with the tape on the end of the schooling whip :) sounds like a plan :o
