Giant Native Ponies - Who Else Has One?

Arizahn, what is his breeding? sire and dam? I am interested having bred several connemaras
Sire is Moonlight Silver Shadow, dam is Knockadteen Lady.

Arizahn I think you live near me! He is lovely :)
<waves> Penninsula?

In other news, YO dug out the proper measuring stick today and Camel is less tall than I had measured with my tape. Proper stick puts him at a dinky 15.1hh! He looks bigger, but I'm more than happy to go with the stick. Either my measuring was off, or he's shrank in the rain :D

I have a 16hh Welsh D. He's not very in proportion but a great horse. Such a kind boy even allowing for his more 'welsh' moments! I will have a dig around for some photos on here.

I'd love a 16hh Welshie too, but unfortunately a lot of the larger ones aren't such great examples...or they're Masemynachs and bonkers.

Another vote with nothing wrong (maybe a bit quirky!)with Maesymynach ds, and mines only 15hh !

Used to event a 16.2 hh connie, he was super! Pony mind with horses ability. I gave up telling people he was a connie as they used to give me strange looks! Unfortunately he wasn't mine and I don't know his breeding but the owner used to joke that his parents were under 14.2hh.

Only half welsh D but the part bred Appy, to make 15.2 is now standing at 16hh at 5 and still growing, the 'little brown cob' at rising 4 is 16hh growing like a weed! I think I shall need a ladder and a parachute this spring! :D

Not really that big but I have a 15.2 - maybe half an inch bigger Welshie..

I'd love a 16hh Welshie too, but unfortunately a lot of the larger ones aren't such great examples...or they're Masemynachs and bonkers.

I would typically say she is an alright example (But then, she isn;t huge) however, she is bonkers. Brynithon and Thorneyside lines though. :D

I hope this works... there should be 2 photos

Carlo, the New Forest Horse

Nope, unfortunately I can't see any photos. If you use Photobucket or Pinterest, and then do
it should work :)

I have a Connie who is 15.2hh, he didn't stop growing until he was 7yrs. Born in Ireland his sire was only 13.2hh. He is a lovely example, and very well bred, just over hight.
He was DNA tested to register him with BCPS so I know he is pure Connie.

14.3hh - 15.2 is quite common in the Connemara- there is TB (litte heaven) and arab (naseel) amongst other bigger breeds not so far back in their breeding. That is why, up to recently, they had to be inspected for 'type' before they were allowed to be registered. 15.1 wouldnt be true to type. But due to the EU a breed is a breed and if parentage says its a Connemara it is- irrespective of 'type'

My 3 year old connie (3 in May) is standing at 14.2 already !! reckon she is going to make about 15.1 maybe bigger. She is true to type & got cracking movement.

My Connie is 14.2 but the ones I saw in the show ring at Clifden last summer would have dwarfed him. I was told they only need to pass height at age 2 and can happily keep growing. Big Connies are pretty handy hunters but not much seen this far East.

You could get him transferred onto the overheight and part bred joint register, you can't show him as a pure conne in affiliated classes but you can do the overheightand part bred joint breed show classes? Does he have an English or Irish passport?

This made me smile. Not got him now, but used to have a Maesmynach welshie who was every bit of 15.3 with a bit of growing still to do. He was gorgeous but a bit on the bonkers side, I have to say. He was by Maesmynach Majestic who was 16hands plus I believe.

One of mine is by Maesmynach Majestic, she is only 14hh (square!) though and I wouldn't say she was bonkers at all, bit of character that is all. She is out of a mare by Horeb Euros and I love the Horeb/Maesmynach cross and would have another any day.

I often joke that my perfect 'horse' would be a 14.2/15h Exmoor. But then I give it serious thought and realise are bl00dy scary that would be.
^^^ exactly this!! The way our 20yo Exie behaves on occasion we thank our lucky stars she is only 12.2 as she would be terrifying to deal with if she was any bigger!

Irish, which seems to translate as "How complex can we make this to update?" They like their forms, sigh...

My Dales is 15hh which I think is 2" over breed standard. When I bought him I wasn't looking for anything in particular I just wanted something suitable for a novice, and he has done done his job very well :) .

I am not a million miles from you and 2 of my 4 connies are over-height - 1 is an extremely chunky 15.2 and he would be a great hunter if I could sort out his brakes as he goes like a snow plough! His brother on the other hand is a fabulous hunter

Can you get them reregistered as a C and and D? I know there's certain regs allowing similar things to happen- Cs are often DxA after all.

The C would probably re-register as a D - although he was bred CxC. The A is just a mutant :P

Love them both to bits, and we don't show, so who cares!

A friend of mine has a 16.3 section D. He is lovely and such a nice boy...

But he was semi retired quite young due to coffin joint arthritis. He is sound for light hacking but cannot do any faster work or jumping I don't think.

It's such a shame as he is such a lovely horse.

Connemaras are resolutely increasing in height (which is great: all the better for us adults!), probably to do with better nutrition and a preference for the bigger/14.2h ponies. In the States they have been breeding 16h Connemaras for ages.
