Today one of these flew into my room & I had to go get help to open the window bigger (I'm terrified of them) and it was literally about 2" big. I thought it was my imagination/fear making it so big, but an Oxford biology student saw it and said yes, it's a wasp and yes they can be that big - not a sawfly or anything else...

Anyone else seen one like this?

Terrifying!

We have what looks like a giant wasp in France it is called a Frelin (might not be correct spelling). A biologist friend says they are quiet gentle but most people I know are terrified of them.

It is possible to get nests taken away by our pest control.

probably a hornet wasp! bl**dy hate them!

I think these are the queens.. They will be looking for a nest site. Unless it was more black than yellow; in which case I THINK they are hornets??

I think it would be a Hornet. They look like giant wasps, but are Dark Brown & yellow, rather than Black & yellow. Scary!

Either a Hornet or a giant wood wasp (both are much bigger than a common wasp). The wood wasps don't sting but the females have a huge pointy thing that looks like a sting but is actually for laying eggs. I felt awful last year as I killed one thinking it was a hornet but it wasn't. Wood wasps are yellow and black, Hornets are brown and orange.

Definately a hornet. I rescued one the other week from one of the yard cats. Nothing to be scared of unless you poke at them and make them angry!

At least I know myself well enough to doubt what I'd seen until other people saw it was that size too!

He was bloody angry, the wasp thing. The biologist says he wasn't a hornet due to the colouring but a giant european queen wasp? I think that's what he said?

Sorry, I am allergic to lots of things & really can't face several days of hives all over my body after a bite!
