Gift for seller of horse?

We are picking up new horse in the next few days, and I think we should take a small gift for the seller who is gutted that they have to sell this horse (horse is very very special!). However, I’ve been “shot down” my daughter who says that seller is getting a substantial sum for the horse and they should be satisfied with that. I’m thinking of a bottle of wine or perhaps some flowers.
What are your views on this?

I have previously been bought flowers and given a card with a wonderful message in it. The message meant more, but both were lovely. The buyers each knew I was very upset about having to sell the horse to them.

If your instinct tells you to do it, then go with it. It’s a lovely gesture. Yes the most important thing is that you’re giving him a good home, but by being thoughtful and kind to the sellers they will see you as a kind and thoughtful person.

I bought my horse's previous owner gifts and a card to say thank you. Slightly different scenario as he was gifted to me, but I know how much she cares for him and it wasn't an easy decision. She's a FB friend now, we keep in touch and she can see him having fun.

When I bought Bailey from a dealer back in 2004 she was £4680 and we rounded it up to £4800 because we were that delighted with her and because we thought it was quite a cheap price for the quality of horse we were getting, she was Nimmerdors Grandaughter (Big Stars half sister a year before Big Star was born although it meant nothing to me at the time) The dealer had probably made in excess of £1500 on her as imported WB's at that time were going for around 3K mark before the dealers mark up.

She was my best friend for nearly 17 years and we were lucky enough to do such a lot together, so to me she was well worth paying an extra £120 as a little thank you, my Dad agreed with me at the time.

Would I do the same again??? Probably not so much. I didn't give anything extra for Lari but then he was thousands of pounds more anyway and I felt more than he should have been.

Offer to keep in touch but be understanding if the seller doesn't want to. Wiggy's owner was forced to sell due to her deteriorating health and she's found it really difficult to keep in touch as it's just too upsetting. I find it quite hard as I love hearing how well Charlie's doing (I had a lovely Christmas card from him) and would love Wiggy's seller to know how loved and appreciated he is but I have to respect that it's hard for her. I've made sure she has my number and told her she's always welcome to message to ask about him or to visit but that I'll leave the ball in her court and it doesn't matter if she gets in touch after 6 months or 6 years. I hope one day that she will because apart from anything it means she's coping better without him.

When I sold my undoubted horse of a lifetime, the buyers gave me a jumper. They were quite "in" at the time so not something I would have had otherwise, it was blue, with white horses on it in a line pattern! It meant so much to me that I still have it 37 years later...
A few others have given me cards etc. but the keeping in touch after has meant more. As a teen, one family invited me to stay in their mansion for a few days to visit my old pony - it was a bit 'how the other half live'...

Dolly’s owners gave me a card when they picked her up. And they have sent Katie framed pics of Dolly twice since then: soon after they got her and for Christmas this year. They stay in touch very regularly and she’s living her best life with a family who adore her. Knowing how loved she is really has helped Katie

Really lovely idea. I’ve never sold a horse but would be really delighted if I did have to and the seller turned up with a little something.
I became good friends with the owner of one of my horses and she actually visited and even used to come hacking with me from time to time.

I've never bought a seller something at the time of sale but when I had a drawing done of my daughter's old pony I sent a print to his old owners who missed him very much.
