My best friend just lost her very special boy this weekend. It was sudden and unexpected and he was only 15. Too soon. I shared him for many years so am heart broken too. I want to send her a gift. I have sent some flowers with a special message but don't know what would be best. I don't want to upset her more but he was so very special to us both and I would like to honour him in some (appropriate) way. Sure you all have lots of great ideas, many of you having been through it yourself. So tough. :-( x

Do you have any nice photos of her boy? A photo book or framed photo would be lovely, or a canvas print? I did a nice album of a horse I lost which I love to look at from time to time.

Pencil drawing or painting of said horse? Or if you kept some tail or mane perhaps some jewellery?

She already has a large painting (pencil drawing) of him and some nice pics. Was thinking a photo pic book as I have lots of funny ones of him and thought that might make her smile when she is feeling able to look at it. Haven't got any hair and doubt she took any before he was taken away. Great ideas guys. Thx x

If you wanted something in flower now then a Hamamelis (witch hazel) is rather pretty for a winter garden or a Daphne for the beautiful scent or maybe some snowdrops. An apple tree is an excellent idea, I couldn't decide what tree to buy for my horse so if I saw something I liked I bought it - I ended up with an entire orchard plus a greenhouse stuffed full of apricot, nectarine, peach trees - completely over the top but a fitting memorial.

I'm sorry about your friend's horse - he sounded very special to both of you and as you say 15 is too soon.
