Girl killed by her own horse

Terrible thing to happen, poor girl. Best wishes to the family. At least they are understanding of the fact that accidents do happen, and that horses, being live animals, can be unpredictable

Tragic, no one wants to hear stories like this.
I guess this reminds us that the BHS and other places/people say to wear hats at all times for a reason, sadly riding, and being around horses, will always be a risk sport and accidents do happen..

That really is such a tragedy. RIP Lauren, thinking of your family and friends who must be really struggling to come to terms with losing you.

I know of twelve people that have been killed in similar circumstances through my life - I'm glad to see here that the horse wasn't blamed.

However, I'd take issue with the "unpredictable" angle - horses have four feet and don't forget a big head on the end of a long neck fitted with teeth - they can be pretty handy with all of them given the right provocation. Luckily I learned early, back in the days when it was considered the height of humour to send in the uninitiated youngest to the wildest unbroken two-yearolds - and survived but I have had lumps on both forearms and one in the high left shoulder as battle scars to prove it!

If I have a good tip to pass on it would be to stand close - the kick won't have travelled so far. Approach a horse from the front and then keep a hand on as some seem to forget you are there very quickly and express surprise when touched...... but then some are just plain mean - made that way by humans of course.

Rip Lauren, but OP why make a point of saying 'her own horse' what difference does that make? it was an accident and could happen to anyone on any horse, not like the horse did it on purpose or maliciously, which is kinda how you made it sound.

Just to clarify a a couple of inaccuracies in the report there;

- Solo hadn't "escaped from the field", he had been being led up from the field and then was seen loose on the track.
- The "stable hands" who found Lauren were her friends. And she wasn't supposed to be "on his back" as he was being led in from the field, not ridden, at the time.
- No one was with her at the time, although she was found very quickly afterwards, so no one can be sure exactly what happened, they don't know that he "lashed out". He is a very easy horse to handle on the ground, a big sop, and this apparent incident is very out of character. She may well have tripped and been accidentally stood on when she fell over. :(

She was a friend of mine as I kept Hopalong on this yard until August last year. I'd known Lauren about 3 years and she was a genuinely lovely girl. She would ride Hopalong now and then when I was away and she was a really lovely, quiet and talented rider. Still feels unreal and everyone at the yard is still in shock.

Thank you FigJam for sharing that with us, and condolescences to all her friends and family, yourself included. What a sad loss - RIP Lauren 80(

I love though that they're respecting her wishes as it were - it would be so easy to get rid of the horse and blame him. The family obviously knew their daughter very well, and it's a beautiful tribute that all friends will be at the funeral in their riding gear. What a beautiful goodbye for a horse-lover 80)

I put that because in the report her parents aren't blaming the horse and theyre keeping the horse.
It just shows how our own animals that we trust and think can't do anything harmful are still unpredictable.

RIP Lauren

I think I commented on FigJam's thread about this.

It is such a shame but unfortunately you can never know when even the most trusted old horse will spook or kick out. I am glad, however, that the horse is not being blamed.

Big hugs to you FigJam, and the rest of Lauren's family and friends.

thoughts are with family and friends. its always a wake up call when you hear sad stories like this :( RIP xxxxx

:-( yard rule at our place, we have to wear a hat when putting out or fetching in.

The above is bl**dy good advice.

I speak from experience as the left side of my face was reconstructed nine years ago. One of my 3 year olds caught me in the face with a hind hoof after being turning out. Thankfully he was unshod but a cm either way and I wouldn't have survived. I've lost my sense of taste and have minimal feeling on the left side of my face as a result of the accident and know I would have been saved this if only I'd been wearing a hard hat at the time.

Poor poor girl who's lost her life. RIP. Thoughts are with her family and friends. x

The paper always seem to "manipulate" things when reporting, ill fell fowl of that before. Thanks for clarifying things. However a young girl has lost her life and as Figjam says noone really knows what happened, it was just a tragic accident. RIP Lauren. I think its a lovely tribute her friends are wearing riding clothes

Such a tragic accident :( RIP Lauren. My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this terrible time.

It does make you think about how dangerous our sport can be, even when we're not riding. Poor girl :(
