I turned my very hairy unclipped cob out today without his rug on. I could hear the girls over the wall in the tack room saying that I was cruel and shouldn't be a horse owner. Im too shy to confront. :( they think a horse should be rugged up to the ears until march/April which IMO is wrong as each horse is different. A bit upset tonight.

Don't be upset, you know what you're doing and you're doing the best for your horse. Leave them to it, one day they'll be mature enough to not say rubbish :) X

My unhairy, non clipped, sport horse was out naked today. The weather was warm and sunny and it was nice for her to have a roll with no rug on :)

Take no notice of them, it says more about their ignorance of a horses needs than you being 'cruel'!

gosh what would they say about my yard, half of them have been left naked tonight as well! Ignore them, seriously have they not got anything better to do! Sounds like you know what your doing OP!

Agree take no notice, my fully clipped Connie was out naked today perfectly happy and for once not waiting to come in. If I had done that last my old yard I'd probably had the same reaction as you got.

If it was anything like mine toay it was roasting. I was in a t-shirt and horses were too warm as not moulted yet!

You're a far better horse owner looking at the day and horse presented to you rather than making a fixed decision on temp/date etc to do rugs. So many people forget to check a horse rather than judging their own temperature or what happened last year :(

Send 'em to me. My poor hairy 20yr old hasn't been rugged all winter. Turned out 24/7. Snow, rain, frost. Only gets hay when snow on ground, token feed just to get vit supplement into her.
Oh and on that cruel regime she has gained around 30kg :D

I understand that it can feel upsetting to hear, but that doesn't mean that it is worth being upset over what some persons who doesn't know that much about horses says, since they obviously doesn't know the simple basic fact that horses can be different.

Seriously, try your very best to stop thinking about it, ignore them and go on doing what you know suits your horse and makes him happy, that is all that truly matters.

Oh don't be upset! What do they know...?

It's been 12degrees here... Who in their right mind would rug horses in THAT heat?

I would have had a barbecue today if I had known it was going to be this balmy. In Newcastle, I bet the boys had shorts on and the girls were wearing bikinis!!

people need to keep their noses out, you know your horse they dont!

my 2 were naked 2 a rising 3 unclipped conny x tb and a rising 28 blanket clipped conny x tb (whos the hottest horse I know!) won't be long before they are naked at night at this rate!

if fact my mare legged it when she realised I had just gone back up to put her rug on! she came into the shelter, saw the rug and ran off! so that just goes to show its not too cold haha

He was probably well happy out there getting some sun on his back and having a nice scratch. I know my cob was today! He had a day out in the sun without his rug on too.

Don't let them get them you down.

Tell em I had my 2 TBs out (one of which doesn't get a winter coat, simply goes darker) out today naked. I also had grazing muzzles on cos the grass is quite lush.
Loved to have seen them bitch about me!

Ignore them. Guaranteed if horses could talk, they would have all asked for a rug free day and you made it happen for your horse.

The horsey world is a bitchy place unfortunately, you jut have to grow a thick skin or laugh it off. xx

My clipped cob was out naked today, he thoroughly enjoyed it an wasn't cold in the slightest!!
Now I have to spend an hour trying to remove the caked-on mud! :D:

Nell has been unrugged almost all winter. I had to fairly recently chuck on a rain sheet as she started to get a little rainscald, she is a yak and I popped her into her stable unrugged tonight

I expect some people have been shocked at her being unrugged, I have had comments made directly to me before, but I just ignore them, she is my horse and I know her best!

Ignore them

Good job I'm not at their yard, I considered turning my tb out rugless to have a good roll and itch it was so mild. So silly but hurtful so hugs- chin up your horse you know best x

If it would make you feel better I would try and speak to the one who was leading the conversation, preferably when she is on her own. You could start up a chit chat with her then casually mention that you overheard her discussing your horse being unrugged and could she let you know why they were criticising you. Tell her you felt a bit upset and in future you'd rather she speak to you directly if she has concerns about your horse, rather than talking about it behind your back.

I know you say you are shy but I think speaking 1 to 1 with one of them would help and would warn her that you don't put up with being bitched about. Hopefully she will feel sufficiently embarrassed to make her think twice about doing it next time.

I'm a shy person too and hate confrontations but I think it makes you feel better when you've stood up for yourself.
