Another Dog Attack

A 10-year-old girl is to undergo surgery after being bitten in the face by a Staffordshire bull terrier.

The child suffered a 6cm wide and one-inch deep cut to her cheek at a North Yorkshire army base.

She will have an operation at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

A 21-year-old woman, believed to be the animal's owner, was arrested but released on police bail.

She was held on suspicion of having a dog which was dangerously out of control in a public place.

The attack happened at the Alanbrooke Barracks, which are just a few miles from Thirsk.

Sergeant Ben Frank, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "The parents of the girl are understandably extremely upset.

"It's very distressing for all concerned.

"But we must realise that owners of dogs have a clear responsibility to make sure they're under control."

The dog, who attacked the girl outside her home, has been destroyed.

Police do not believe its owners are related to the victim's family.

Both families live on the base.

^^ the parents also have a responsibility to controle their children, animals and small kids don't mix, the sooner people come to terms with this the better. I am not in any way condoning what the dog did, and it did need to be destroyed, however i just dont buy that a dog randomly and spontaniously attacked a child with out being provoked in any way.

Poor girl.
A staffie attacked my mother in laws horse with her on it for no reason. The child has alot more (or should have) rights to be in the street than any dog. Im not a dog hater ive got three, but i keep them under control, and dont expect people to keep their kids away from my dogs, its my job to control my animals. Dog owners SHOULD be responsible for their pets, we choose to have them.

not all dogs have been brought up around kids so i would prefer parents to ask owners of dogs before they let their child go up to any dog. i was always taught as a child never to go up to any strange dog and to always let the dog go to you that way wouldnt be invading the dogs space.
