Poppy has a small rub on the left hand side of her body, just behind her elbow, her girth must be rubbing her. She has a leather elasticated atherstone girth now, is there a type that might not rub her? Or anything I can do to stop it?

My mare has a small patch either side just behind her elbow that rubs and can get sore. I think she has a whorl of hair there. To start with I put a bit of vaseline on it before I put the girth on and that stopped it but now I use sheepskin girth sleeves which also stop it. I have an elasticated synthetic girth, Not sure of the make.

I have found the girth you are using often rub where the elastic and leather join, either a non elastic leather girth or a synthetic one with elastic both ends, the join seems less bulky on the synthetic ones. The shaped girths are good as they are cut back around the elbow so dont rub so much, a layer of gamgee wrapped round yours will help for now.

I've got a loan horse with similar issues, Id like to get her a different girth and a soft sheepskin sleeve, does anyone know if the synthetic sleeves are as good as real sheepskin or must it be real for best results? Also can anyone post a link to a good example of a good shaped girth?

My horse got a similar rub from a leather girth and a sleeve did not get rid of it so I tried a wintec synthetic one but any of the elasticated synthetic girths are fine on him. They are easy to clean and cheap too. I used to have a breast girth as the saddle slips a little and that gave him rubs too so I put the sleeve on that and again, it made no difference.

Basicly, he can only wear synthetic girths, everything else rubs him.
