Girthiness

I have an ex-Riding school pony who has always pulled a face at having his girth done up - even when he was at the riding school in a different saddle. But, recently it seems to have gotten worse...he’s turning around to bite me as I’m doing it. He reacts badly if I just feel the area with my hand without his saddle on as well. I know this could be ulcers, over tightening of the girth, previous trauma that he remembers or an ill fitting saddle.

My physio looked at him a month ago and said he was girthy - she also mentioned his saddle was lifting at the back so I switched out the gullet for a smaller one to fix this problem. Forgive me if I’m being stupid but I really don’t understand how an ill fitting saddle causes girthiness? My horse has always been girthy no matter what saddle he has on...

His girth is a non-elasticated neoprene dressage girth and he has a heather moffett flexee dressage saddle (17”). He is 15.2hh ISH and quite short backed.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated! ?
