I've always used a girth with one side elastic. This was because ages ago a saddler told me to- Elastic for comfort but double elastic he said would risk over tightening and galls.
I've just stuck with that, not least because its all they sell locally! I do now believe double ends is actually best?

New horse who came with tack has a non elastic girth. Is there any reason why this could be best? Its a Thorowgood cob girth (he's not a cob!)

Which does everyone prefer and why?

My saddle fitter told me either both elastic or neither. Said elastic on just one side causes an imbalance and can cause overtightening on one side that pulls the saddle over and results in an incorrect fit. I only ever use girths with elastic both ends. My gelding has a gall on either side from him previous home and my double elastic ha never caused him any issue what so ever.

I use to use a girth with elastic only one side. Now I would only use a girth without, or with elastic both sides (baring in mind not to tighten too much). Same reasons as Paint Me Proud mentioned.

Don't like them with elastic as daughter used to over tighten them so don't use them at all now
