Mine have a few weeks off over Christmas but it's now into the 3rd week oh well they won't mind, I think I will get back riding in the next few days, no snow due here just sharp frost so just have to wait until the afternoon really so not too bad.

I think if it's icy it's not worth riding and at least they are in the field no point stressing about it, I tend to give them a good groom everyday and a tidy up with the extra time lost from riding.

Yep me! Horses have had no exercise for 2 weeks now and I worry about their respectively knackered joints which require structured regular exercise. But they're getting turned out everyday so I'll try not to fret too much. Unfortunately, me, I am rapidly turning into a fat slob with not riding / schooling!

Getting to that point - throw in my car being on strike as well. Our turnout is really limited in winter so he's getting a leg stretch and/or walker time but its far from ideal.
The arena is saturated or frozen at the moment, and if the lane is icy its not safe to hack. We were hiring and/or going for lessons for at least once a week of doing something a bit "more". We can only do what we can do though. It's frustrating and I'm unhappy with it but I can't change it, got to deal with the world as it is not as we would like it to be

I’m in the same boat. Lane is sheet ice and arena is under a couple of inches of snow. I am not a happy camper! Horses are only out every other day and their behaviour is steadily getting more bonkers and I’m getting fatter by the day!

We are exceptionally lucky as have an indoor but circles in the sand pit are getting a bit tedious now, only so much polework/jumping you can do to break it up and don’t want to hammer them on a surface all the time. Hacking is done when I’m not working, which isn’t often enough ? and typically weather turns icy and crap at weekends.
I’m just getting what I can done. They go out most days which again we are lucky for, they stayed in the odd day over Christmas when it was too dangerous to get across the yard to turn out but otherwise they seem quite happy with the situation. Roll on spring!

Same here struggling to ride as everywhere so icy. Luckily ours go out every day all day, no matter what, and mine goes on the theraplate daily too, so I’m not going to get myself all worked up over it?‍♀️

Yep, when the snow came down at the end of December I decided to give Arts a month off and really glad I have. The pony is still ticking over with the odd 20 mins in the school and in hand work. Good to just not stress about stuff for a bit with everything else going on atm

Mine are turned out all day every day but I am getting fed up of not being able to ride. I've only got two bridleways here. One is public bridleway which is unusable in bad weather. The other is a permissive bridleway which I can't use at the moment because there is livestock in the fields. Times like this that I wish I had an arena. I think it's horsey holidays now till spring.

Thick snow fell here overnight 27 into 28th December. It has lain ever since with almost nightly top ups but between compacting down and a small amount of daytime melt/refreeze it's pretty icy underneath now. I haven't seen grass in a fortnight! Obviously no riding for me and it was -8 when I got home from work at 11pm last night so I'm looking forward to another morning of chipping poopsicles off the ground whilst walking like a penguin ? No end in sight in the forecast either, Friday into Saturday being singled out as particularly cold.... If -8 is not worthy of mention in the forecast then I shudder to think how cold that will be ?

My current record for living here was -18 in the winter of 2010.... I was out in that temperature for nearly 2 hours that evening with a vet doing an emergency dental, they decided to do my other routine that night rather than risk the journey a second time only to discover their sedation had frozen solid in the time it took to do the first horse!
