I had decided that Blue the Fell pony isn't made of sugar and will not melt in the rain and will not freeze to death in the snow, nature having given him a built in snuggly fur coat

This morning was freezing and I could feel myself wavering and was considering buying him a rug

This evening Blue wasn't stood at the gate shivering to come in so I am sure he is fine really!

Slap me and tell me not be so stupid - he doesn't need a rug really.............does he.....???

slap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you pull the forelock back you will find a care label which says i will not shrink in the rain. and a freezer label which says as long as i have good hay or haylage i will survive the winter!!!!! he was made to live in the fells and endure the worst of conditions!!! he will survive in la la land!! feed as required no rug necessary!!!! he is not a poof!

Try telling this to my ponys owner! Hes a 12.2hh unknown breed (some sort of native i think) covered in fur (although has a trace clip) and hes in everynight wth a fleece and heavywieght full neck rug on and out during the day (providing its not too cold) with the hw neck rug on ... drives me mad! If I owned him he'd still be out 24/7 with the lw neck rug during the day and hw neck at night purely because hes clipped. She also feeds him 3 scoops of recoup and 2 handfuls of alfa a ... Id hve him on a handful of nuts and handful of chaff just to keep him going ... I would be such a cruel mummy

Ah I need one too. I felt exactly the same this evening about our Welsh Sec A, especially when all the other ponies seem to have heavy weight rugs with neck covers on!!

Even our 27 yr old gypsy cob (who did lose condition in Autumn wet weather and wore a rug for a while but got too hot) was absolutely fine out in the snow today with no rug. She wasn't standing under the shelter when I got home although she appeared not long after she heard the car. I brought them in and she had just as much snow on her back as the other 2 younger ones did. I was really pleased because we were a bit concerned that she wasn't eating as much hay as she needed. We've now put her onto Alfa-A oil and she doesn't need a rug. That is so much better for her and for your Blue, he'll be fine!

He'll be fine, if there's some natural shelter they will just put there heads down and get on with it. My welsh d is clipped out because he is a sweaty monkey, last winter (just after the horrible cold bit) I felt like a mean mummy for considering taking some layers off of him when the worst of the cold went. Others still had horses under millions of rugs so I held back and he ended up with heat rash in early march - not a mistake I'll make again. Just beacuse we are bald freaks with central heating and lots of clothes doesn't mean our animals are so wimpy!
