On some simple grids/jumping exercises to help my young (6 year old) horse maintain his rhythm into a fence. He has a tendency to get excited, a bit strong and rush, particularly on the right rein.

His back, teeth, saddle etc have all been checked and are fine, so could this be a balance issue?

Any ideas/advice much appreciated.

what about canter poles to the fence? or circling away and re-establishing the canter if he rushes.
or, do a Y of fences, with a gap of at least 10' between the two parallel fences at the top of the Y (so if you go between them it doesn't feel like a run out), jump the one at the bottom of the Y, then either ride straight between the two, or curve left to that one, or curve right to the other one, or circle away from both. this will make him learn to wait for you to decide where you are going next.
grids in a straight line can make them get keener and keener if they're that sort.

Doing canter poles on a 20metre circle has helped ellie loads!, or doing floor pole, cross pole, then pole again, Trot into fences, or do small fences so literally make him walk up to them then about four strides out ask for trot it helped with my old pony cuz he would fly at the fences, also turning in a circle before the fence so he doesnt think he is always going to head toward it! Im sorry i am not much help

Would definitely recommend using placing poles in front of the jump. Also putting a pole after the jump in the middle of a double can cause them to back off (be prepared for a quick stop the first time they see it).

Another useful exercise is to have a small jump and just keep cantering a 20m circle over the jump.
