Last week after a month of box rest I had to move my mare from mums where she had lived for 6 months very happiy to a livery as we had no gazing left for her. I love the yard and am a roomie to queenbee on here.

Now my mare is rising 4 and approx 15 HH , now normally my 4 year old daughter could lead her in and out of the field , stand with her etc, but ATM she's a moooooooonster. I've had her since she was 15 months old and she was like this when. First owned her. ATM it's taking 3 carrots cut not pieces to keep her attention and feet on the floor to bring her in or turn out, she's out with company of one small pony during day , the first day she did flying leas through the air and managed to kick me on way to field ( we have t walk through anther paddock n way out) now this has got a lot better and we e were down to ne carrot broken into 4 pieces to keep her attention t turn out and bring in, this morning after catching her and bringing half way in I realised I'd forgotten the carrots , she was walking beautifully with me then bag, up n her back legs with no warning spun before I could ill her down and double barrels in my face. Horse now charging about trying t ge back to pony . Grabbed her food bucket but n she peed off ver the hedge and back n to the field.

Ive ridden her 3 times this week, and have left her out yesterday and last night without her rug so she could be a horse and roll and groom etc as she ripped a hole in her flank last month and had stitches and box rest, she's been on new yard a week , last Friday a very calm longer hack with QB , Sunday too her sol around the block (which we have ridden pts before as not fair from mums at new yard) and she was a a55 !

Now the riding issue is due to coming back into work and lifestyle changing etc, also I out her on equivite body builder when she was in as the stress made her drop off a lot, would this effect her , she's always been n fast fibre, spillers conditioning fibre and conditioning cubes, I've stopped the conditioning cubes now, her field hasn't got a lot in it but is nice grass d the milk pellet (body builder) make some horses nuts?? Weaning her off treats until she is actually turned out and gets a carrot then and a bit of carrot in the stable when she as come in nicely as hate using them as bribes , carrots could be adding to the issue due to the sugar, I'm going to use a lunge line and wear my hat so she can't get away and stops doing that. But today she has ruined my day, taken a week off to ride today has been dry and sunny and she's stuck n the field cos she's been an ass ......

No real advice sought , I've dealt with these stage of horses too cub in my old job as a groom but just wanted to vent and ask about the body builder causing mental horse syndrome

home made bread and lashings of butter if you got this far.....

Thanks as I ut as my status earlier.... 4 weeks ago I found out she had ripped herself in half and my world nearly ended .... Now I could rip her in half with my bare hands . So frustrating cos she's normally such a perfectly behaved girl :)

put a bridle on, use a long lead rope/lunge line, gloves, schooling whip and hat-nothing double barrels towards a human with out getting a short sharp lesson-you need to be able to control the front end to keep the back end turned away from you.
personally I would not be bribing with carrots as IMO it does not instill manners, also if she is used to wearing a rug I would rug her as feeling fresh and cold will not help (not an excuse but makes it harder for you if she is cold). I would not put up with this sort of behaviour and it is what I am often asked to deal with when owners cannot cope /are scared.

I don't use the whip to beat but if front or back end come in my direction then it will make firm contact with that part of the horse, good luck she will settle but don't let this behaviour escalate

Honestly I would lead her with a bridle on and a hard hat, if you keep her head by your side she should not be able to double barrel you.

I have a friend who bribes her horse to be able to do anything with her and when you said she ran off so you went to grab her food bucket it sounds as though you are starting to do the same - essentially this is rewarding her for kicking out and getting away. I would be very careful with bribing her to do as you want and instead would remind her of her manners whilst keeping yourself safe. Yes she has moved home but she should still respect you / other people as herd leader!

Edited to add that I agree with the person 2 above me who has put what I am trying to say much better but I was typing at the same time so did not see her reply!

This is what I did with her as a yearling, I got the food bucket today to sto her churning up the other persons paddock , she's not always rugged only in really wet weather....
Lunge line , bridle and hat at the ready, whip tucked under arm ......
I'm so disappointed in myself for not seeing it coming the first time , I'm used to 17hh wb files coming in for the kill and winning those battles, didnt expect my lovely girl to do this now :( wanted to cry this morning , so so mad at myself :(

Every cloud and that..... The dog got an extra long walk instead

When did you stop feeding her conditioning feed and body building stuff ? that sounds like it could be part of your problem. How about just giving her as much hay/ haylage as she wants.

I think the above posters covered the handling issues - I've had absolute horrors in the past with in handling issues -how about a chifney - I know they're severe but with light hands they're very useful - horses really respect them and you may only need to use it once or twice - but I do wonder if you were over 'nourishing' her.

I've cut all feed now apart from fast fibre in evening and she's only getting a handful as everyone else is fed . Tonight was a different horse, came in almost remorseful acting ...... Hopefully after being out naked in the hail today she's learnt her lesson....

Most horses that have been on box rest go completely nuts when you are trying to bring them back up. Mine was exactly the same.

You need to get her out and ridden as often as possible so that she burns off some energy. Also lead her in a bridle and be firm, do not reward her with food. Just do walk halt walk walk etc on the lead until she learns to respect you again.

Boyo is a bit like this too atm :( I think it's the weather and the lack of turnout, as atm he either goes out on his own and goes nuts in the field, or stays in with his mates who all seem to be on boxrest for one reason or another. Usually he's an angel to lead which makes it worse somehow :( Roll on summer!!

LL, I think she will be fine, she's been through a lot this last month or so and is just feeling her toes a bit too much. I agree with everyone, lead her in a bridle, or even with the lead rope through her mouth, just for a bit more control, hat, crop etc for a few days, she will quickly settle down with this. I'd also do 5-10 mins of ground work everyday or as regularly as you can in the school. Just to remind her of all the rules. don't fret lovvie, this will all pass quickly. I should be free for a hack on Thursday (weather permitting) if you want to go out together xx

Mums home so can have lily, I'm going to hack in the morning, Thursday sounds brilliant :) she was much better tonight and C came and held the gates open which helped :) bridle going on to go out tomorrow, I've actually got her manly old one here so will shove it on cos don't care if she snags it then . Feel lost without yup at the yard....

I used the body builder on my boy briefly - he was worked every day too but it still made him a bit mad! He is quite sensitive though, went back to normal when I cut it out though.

We have 100 mph winds in cornwall today , just been out n sideways rain for 25 m ute hack and she was perfect :) have kept her in today due to the other horses on yard who are just stood at their gates waiting to come in,at least she has hay and a dry back :) so pleased she was good ot hacking , no body builder for 3 days and nothing more than ff in her feed :)
