Give me your money or I will kill my horses!

This particular charity believes this:

Is more dangerous to the environment than this:

Registered charity or no, that scares me!

And sorry, but it's not like she didn't see it coming. On noes, I suddenly need loads of money, I know, I'll threaten to kill the horses. She shouldn't have had a rescue in the first place. She can kill them all she likes, I view the putting to sleep of elderly and crippled horses as a mercy, and this is one mercy she should have offered them years ago. But when I can't afford my own home, why the hell should I donate to buy her hers. Unless I get to sleep there too!!!

Charity or not could they not get a mortgage ? They dont need it all upfront ?? They have a deposit at least now?? Or are the "mangers" pasts rather suspect so they will not be lend money ;);)???

A registered charity's trustees can't receive any remuneration either I don't think, only "reasonable expenses". Not sure of the thresholds but depending on size a set of charity accounts may be subject to a full audit or to be verified by an Independent Examiner. (Disclaimer: Or something along those lines.....) So I would be more comfortable donating to a registered charity. Poor horses. When I win the euromillions tonight I will set up my own refuge which will be a mix of rescues and "rescues" (ie horses I like the look of) :)

I'm ready to stand corrected on this, but when I went to see this place they had too many horses for the number of acres. Nor did they have enough buildings, stables and shelters to bring them in, so a lot were stood in nothing but mud. So if anyone knows them maybe they wouldn't mind clarifying how many residents they have and how many acres of grazing they have?
I seriously can't get my head around this, there was a similar case regarding a "sanctuary" in Devon, and there are others around the UK. Private individuals go out, rent some land, stock it up (or over stock it) with "rescues" and then when they can't afford to look after them properly, or as in this case they are under threat of losing the rented land, the public are asked to cough up. Always threatening that the animals will be pts if they aren't bailed out. How many of you here would love to be set up with a farm that you could use to rescue needy equines? If you decide to rescue animals as a private individual I honestly feel that you should make sure you have the resources to fund them yourself.
The advantage of a charity is that it at least has a board of trustees, and an overseeing body, so some sort of control over what happens with the money and some accountability.

I lost a bit of my post there. I meant to say, could someone clarify, just so I'm sure I'm thinking of the right place. There can't be that many.

My sympathies are with the horses involved here, but I am sure they will be happy to live in rented farmland rather than put everyone to the trouble of buying somewhere for them.

I am wondering now about setting up a welfare organisation - a couple of years ago I "rescued" a TB from racing - where he was forced to gallop around and jump fences once a fortnight (depending on his form). I think it is time to establish a refuge for him - I can buy some nice land around this way, with his long legs he will probably need about 20 acres, I will ensure I get some sort of house onsite so I am there to look after him 24/7 and ensure his every need is met, I will make sure it has a few bedrooms so regular donators can come and see him.

I will need to raise about £500k - can you help? I am willing to take on eventing schoolmasters and give them the same chance in life my boy deserves...

That is so selfless of you! It brings a tear to my eye, I wish there were more like you. Put me down for £10. :(

Well, they have not been thrown off the land yet! In the local paper today is another plea from them, they still need £300,000, or they will put the horses to sleep. as far as i understand this has been going on for almost a year, but I have not heard of them doing any fund raising, you know, a raffle, a sponsored sometthing! why cant they help themselves!
But, just one thing, if they are not a charity, surely these celebrities would have looked into that?
