Bought Buzz nearly a year ago as a (admittedly croup high) 16.1hh ISH x DWB 5 year old, expecting some growth....last time I measured him three months ago he'd gone past the 17hh mark and has got bigger since. He has now gone bum high again so looks like we're in for some more growing - was I wrong to expect it to slow down now he's 6 and a half? Anyone else's WB had excessive growth between 5 and 6? I don't mind the fact he's bigger, it just leaves me a bit stuck with regards to potential lorries and and things in future!

This is the difference over 10 months or so....

Ill be keeping an eye on this one too. My rising 4 is 16.1 at the moment but has ridiculously long legs so hope he grows into them. 18.1??!! hope he doesnt reach that :D have had that they think he will make 17.2. His half bro is 3 and a half and 17.2 already  Guess mines the slow grower!

Bought my oldenburg boy 1 year ago at 16.3hh at 4, he is now 5 and now pushing 17.1hh

No idea what he going to finish at but he had big long sturdy legs , he had LOADS of filling out to do that's for sure.

I bought Winnie (tons of pics of him on my website below) as a 3yo and he was roughly 16hh and skinny as anything. He's now 7 and he's def 17hh although most people would say more. If you look on my last blog post I'm standing next to him and I'm about 5'6''/7.
He's grown this year because I've just got his heavy weight turnout out and its coming up a bit small!!

People say they don't stop until they are 8/9!! He's grown out of so many rugs and I didn't bother getting him a decent saddle until the end of last year because he changed so much. I relied on a good old changeable gullet one!

I know what you mean about the rugs! Mine was in my old arabs 5'9 rugs at a year old (although they were a bit large) but by the next winter he was in a 6'9 (again a bit large but i bought a 6'3 in a sale that turned out to be a 6'9 when it arrived). He did have a 6'3 as well but grew out of that in weeks! Did hear that my old YO was moaning at my friend the other day as she bought a rug slightly too big and said that i was annoying cos my rugs are always too big!!!! Cheek of it! guess what, same rugs fit him fine now and im not out of pocket :D

Ha I did the same! I have just bought a reduced fleece combo at 7ft.. surely that will last a while! His turnout was the super duper premier equine one with all the changeable layers and its lasted so well I'm gutted!
My friends just bought a youngster and enjoying winnies hand me downs!

Not as radical growth as yours, but my mare who as a 5yo was 16.3 and just looked like she had a little filling out to do has grown a good centimetre in the last 12 months and filled out massively, she looks huge now. She is a late developer all round, a bit babyish mentally and teeth are not 100% through yet.

Mini TX's mare is a KWPN crossed with a full TB. The only bit of TB about her is her head and neck and turn of speed xc. She is now 10 and to be fair, she only stopped looking babyish around her head a couple of years ago. She also seemed to 'grow up' in her head around that time as well.

My advanced horse grew between the ages of 7 to 9, and changed shape significantly too, but she did grow over an inch from 8-9. My four yr old is 17.1 now, he was 16.1 at this time two years go. My five yr old is currently croup high and 18.1, she was rejected from the foal auctions as she was too small.......

According to my WBs Irish SJ records he was 16.1hh as a 5 year old. He was 17.2hh when I bought him in february (he's 7). I measured him again a few months ago and he's up to 17.3hh. So that's another inch in only 6 months. He's got filling out to do too. I don't mind too much as i'm nearly 6ft.

Croup high at 18.1? Wowweee! I hope you have big stables!

Oh god - mine was 16.1 at 17 months - now 3.5 and 17.2 - gangly as anything and clearly has a huge amount of growing still to do :0 he's full trak

Tehe. I got his fly rug this year at 7ft (mainly because nowhere seemed to have 6'9 and he desperately needed one). Im fussy though, I like the front to have some overlap so its not got a gap so thinking that he may need 7fters soon!

PS Winnies lovely :)

Someone mentioned the mentality of their WB too. How quickly have yours matured mentally? Mines a proper baby at times and he's 4 in January.

This is all good news to me.

I have a Dutch Warmblood 5yr old on loan and he is only a tiny 15.3hh but a lovely package. I'm really hoping he'll grow as the bigger he gets the less likely the owner will want him back !

I'm not so sure about the Irish SJ records being accurate for height. My trainer did her paperwork and it stated 16.2. She was only 16.1 at the time. She is 16.2 now. And a friend of mine has her mate down as 160 and she's not a hair over 15.1!

In addition to height, my mare just widened. Not fat, muscle. She's in a 6.9 rug and her butt pokes out a wee bit. She's 6 and needs to stop growing!!!! The TB mom never really filled out til 7 so I don't know.

I did breed one for myself. She is 2 and just at 15.1. Not really doing much growing. I'm hoping she maxes at 15.3 and stays nice and compact. The other one is big everywhere except height but has a long back, long neck, long pelvis, and shoulder. There's just a lot of her.

But yup, they keep on maturing.

Terri
