Repeatedly on this forum, people really knock rescues for being too fussy, not getting back to them, wrong dogs...

Firstly - ring around rescues - not just one thinking they will have your perfect dog. Google Dog Rescue - there are LOADS, not just the Blue Cross. There are all the specialist breed rescues plus loads like Rescue Remedies - the list is endless.

Secondly - not getting back to you... these are all CHARITIES, they are over stretched, under funded and relying on volunteers giving up their time to work to save these dogs. They have to continually make decisions knowing that a no could well mean the dog gets put down. Rescues are being forced now in the main to be more "fussy" about a dog they will take on - they can't afford to be "stuck" with one.

Thirdly - Wrong dogs - try to be a little more open. A good rescue will try to fit you with your dog - and you get to meet it and have a cooling off period when the dog comes home. Not all rescues have manic killer dogs which they lie about - most will really try but come on, work with them..

So before you avert your eyes from rescues, can I please make a plea for the poor dogs that don't make it into rescue - they are poundies, can't get into a home and are put to sleep. Go to read

Battersea are overwhelmed, last year they put down over 3000 dogs, mostly staffies.

So before you are quick to critisize please take a breath and try to help - if you can't take a dog, how about fostering one? to help it get rehomed, or walking one, or just volunteering to do a rescue run from the pounds down to rescues..

And no, I am not affiliated to any of the above. I have helped with the odd fund raising day for staffie rescue, been called upon to do a run to collect poundies but I am not a regular giving up all their time for this.

AMEN TO THIS!

100% agree with you!

Its usually an excuse because people want a puppy and want everyone to feel they were forced into buying from a puppy mill.

NOT ALL THE TIME I KNOW BUT A LOT OF THE TIME!

OP I do agree with you completely - but I don't think people on here necessarily knock rescues - a lot of us had/have rescues and I know the majority of regular posters on here would recommend people opt for a rescue over a pup if possible. However, some rescues (some more so than others) do appear to be rather fixated on what constitutes a "perfect" home - and don't seem to show flexibility of mind to understand that you *can* work full-time/not have a huge garden etc and still be the perfect home for a dog. I've been there, I know how difficult it can be, not to mention frustrating.

The fact we are posting about on here I think goes to show how much we DO want to help - we WANT to give these dogs homes. I understand that there are small, under-staffed charities involved, but for charities that depend on good customer/PR relations, some are lacking these skills. Highlighting these issues on forums such as this can lead to issues being resolved - the charity I got my dog from had a major re-shift due to customer feed-back. :)

We're all in it for the dogs. That's why we're here :)

I take your point - but in the various posts I have seen it looks like a knocking exercise only with no one standing up for the rescues - hence this one. I just wanted to show that people who are thinking of a rescue could look a little further. Maybe the people who have had bad experiences could feed that back directly to the rescues involved but above all, its a plea not to give up. I have to admit that rehoming for me was easier because staffie rescue were foremost concerned as to staffie experience and what I could give the dog and then went into the actual detail of how I would manage them.

What a good post Lucie, as I rescue I can truely say we are indeed over streatched, I sometimes cannot find time to wipe my ar£e Im so busy, and I do indeed let messages go to answer phone and dont get back to people till the next day because I dont like to contact them at 10pm at night and my mam works full tme aswell as running a private rescue funded by her alone, she get up at 5am and she goes to bed at 12 midnight, she has no life, her life is her dogs and her job which she does to fund the dogs and she takes longer than me to return a call due to lack of time, but I also understand the other side, someone is desperate for a dog and wants a quick reply, also it also suprises me that so many people also think they are the perfect home and the rescue is bollox, and to be honest there are a few on here I personally would not have rehomed a dog too, but then there are some fab homes too and I have indeed rehomed 4 dogs to users on this forum and could not have asked for better homes:)

My dogs are all rescues and you have seen the dog pics I have posted of the fab dogs we get in and Im sure those who have taken them from me can reiterate that they have made fab pets and been worth the wait, I made Carey wait months for Amy, and she still hung on in there:p

It's not about placing a dog somewhere because it's a rescue, it's about finding the right match and ending that dogs passey the parcel way of life and not have it bounce back because the adopter where just to inpatient to get the dog in the first place, I can say it is a longer process than buying a puppy, but I think I can hand on heart say we certainly take more care where we place our dogs and we do not make any kind of profit so no incentive there:rolleyes:

I do understand both sides and I do agree some rescues are simply OTT, but there are ones that simply just want what is best for their dogs.

Glances across at little Amy lying curled up snoring her head off......:D:D

You bet I did, and I have never ever regretted it for a second :):):)

Awww, and despite how I mock you:eek:, I could not have asked for a better mammy for her (and no doubt the homes I turned down would have despised me/one woman literally did) but I did not want the first home, I wanted the best home.

No one will tuck her in as toastie as Carey in the winter;):D 15 tog coat here we come:p
