Giving Antibiotic Powders

Following on from yesterdays post of lump on side of head, vet came out today and said my mare had an infection in her tooth and it had started growing sideways. The food is getting clogged up behind the tooth which had caused the infection. She managed to rasp the teeth beside it and tidy up her mouth but she said the tooth was lodged too tight to pull out at the moment, need to get the infection down and then try again. She has given me antibiotic powders but I have had no luck today in getting my mare to take them. She is unable to eat carrots as her mouth too sore. Has anybody got any ideas of how to tempt her to eat her feed with the powders in ?
 
Will she eat them in her feed??

You could also split her feeds to four or even five a day, and divide the powders between them. That way she gets less powder.

Failing that - syrynge it down.
 
Thanks AmyMay had not thought of syrynging, will try the smaller feeds first to see if that works

Try treacle butties! Spread a piece of bread with black treacle, sprinkle powders on that and put another piece of bread on top. As long as her mouth isn't too sore to eat the bread should do the trick. I find they work every time.
 
Grate a couple of apples, mix in the powders and put it between 2 slices of bread, worked a treat with my horse when she was on anti-biotics and she is VERY fussy!!!

Grated so much easier to eat with sore mouth etc.
 
If all the above fail, then try mixing the powder with a pot of natural yoghurt and then mixing the lot in her feed. Yoghurt comes in useful for disguising the taste of all sorts of things!
 
badminton high fibre nuggets, soaked into a mash!! everyone at my yard swears by then for getting medication into horses, they smell lovely and are extremly palatable!
 
My favourite way of getting anything unpleasant (including bute) into my boy is to soak a handful of cubes - doesn't matter what sort, real cheapies are fine - and when nicely mushy add medication and offer before main feed. Works like a charm for all the horses on my yard where owners have tried it.
 
they is a type of powder grained thats called chop that people feed adult pigs, it is oats and corned crushed into powder. that u mix wit water lots of horses love this. i use this when i have to give antibiotic powders. if your mare can eat it this way. it won't hurt her at all by using chop. i have used it for 8 yrs now on horses. but this is soft enough for her to eat it, witout too much pain
 
I found a round scoop of Build Up mix with the antibiotic powder mixed up in it and fed dry and from the scoop always did the trick! It didn't work with bute though.
 
i mix the antibiotic powders with custard powder and then add hot water - wait for the custard to cool down and syringe it down - he can't get enough!
