Im going to do this today (I hope) never done it before and am rather nervous, (not that I mind inoculations/needles etc etc) but my veins arnt very keen to pop up!

Any tips from those that have?

Lie back and think of England

hehehe

Don't look when they do it and make sure you keep clenching and releasing you fist to keep the whole thing nice and quick. Then you can stock up on biscuits

Just relax it's fine and the more relaxed you are the better your blood flows. The smalltalk is worse than the haridresser but the penguin at the end is the best bit!

Drink plenty of a sugary drink, like tea with a spoon of sugar afterwards to replace the volume.

If you are nervous abotu it they have a local anaesthetic spray they can use.

I would just like to say thanks for giving blood - My little Mum has gone in to hospital for a blood transfusion today. It is something I have always thought of doing but not got round to ... I will be doing now and the OH is getting dragged along too !

Hope you were bravex

Not gone in yet - going round 2.30 so will report back later - I hope its something I can manage as my veins are pretty shy. Its something I too feel very strongly about, I have a friend fresh back from Afghan in Selly Oak and hes had to have one. I dont mind doing my bit and if its not somthing that is too traumatic it is certainly something I would like to keep up!

I will let you know later!

make sure you are well hydrated beforehand as well and don't be in too much of a hurry to leave!!

first time daughter gave blood she passed out but only when she was on her way out after making the appointment for the next time - 15mins after she'd finished being bled!! mortified!! especially as the bloke who caught her turned out to be allergic to horses and came out in hives!

quite scary though - went out like a light - lucky she was still inside and not driving home....

eta - sorry, this makes it sound awful!!! She's been fine since!! whole family goes regularaly to do blood, platelets, the works. Never know when someone close to you might need help.

Good Luck! You'll be fine, I'm a regular and my veins aren't the best but if anyone can get a vein the guys at the blood service can, they are the best of the best at that - they have soooooo much practice!

Tell them it is your first time and they will make sure they look after you.

They are lovely people, and I don't find the small talk too bad, the ladies on the blood bus that comes to work are hilarious, like their own little comedy act!

It is an amazing thing to do and more people ought to as it makes such a difference to so many people.

I just think to myself it could be me or one of my family needing a blood transfusion and I would be happy to take it so I should give something back.

More people should do it, it really doesn't hurt does it
