Giving horses eggs?

My grandad was an old horseman that swore by eggs and stout in a feed for horses that were poor doers.

That being said I think that there are probably better modern alternatives available nowadays.

Thanks for your feed back, only just caught up on my post.

Reason I asked is that a lady that was on our livery yard a few years back used to give hers one a day, said it was really good for their condition, coat etc.

Just wondered if this was true/popular thing to do.

There's plenty of fresh eggs on our livery yard, in fact its quite often they will lay in your stable, just thought if its a free egg everyday and its not going to do any harm and its known to benefit then why not give it a go but wanted to check first.

I give 1 raw egg in my dogs dinner everyday as it gives them a healthy shiny coat. Suppose it could work the same way?

Totally different direction but i used to work with birds of prey and remember that we had a cpl birds die from high cholesterol because they were fed on newly hatched chicks as they still had egg yolk which the chicks absorb and live off for the first couple of days after hatching. Anyway, means we cut way back on the chicks to only a cpl days rather than nearly every day and never had the problem again. Just wondering now if those egg yolks could be giving my doggies high cholesterol and could possibly do the same for horses? Think i will have to do a bit of research. Have to love google at times like these. :p

When i was younger and kept my pony at a big livery yard almost everyone added a raw egg to their horses feed (including me) not sure if it made any difference but certainly did no harm! I was told it was for protein!

My instructor recommended I give my old boy one raw egg a day as he was not holding his weight and had been off colour for a while. It is meant to bind them up a little and therefore, they absorb the nutrients etc instead of it just passing straight through them. I have to say it worked wonders on my old chap and he has been on one a day ever since and that was a couple of years ago.

It probably was about 100 years ago lol, just give a vit and min supp or some sunflower oil instead. My pony woudln't eat them, you're supposed to be able to stick the shell in too
