Will try and keep this short, I have a tedancy to ramble :-/

Currently, i'm without my own transport. Now I'm ok using a local transportcompany to take us to shows/training/hiring places out at the moment. It isn't cheap, but the cost isn't a problem really. However I really (sad as this sounds) wouldn't mind meeting some new friends to ride with instead of having the transport guy sitting waiting for me for an hour, and also thought it'd be lovely to have people to travel, chat and ride with. My boy is a baby (4) so it'd also be nice to ride with someone for advice and company. I'd be willing to either pay thier entry fee's or the total cost of hiring somewhere i.e I could hire an indoor with showjumps, xc course, pay for farm rides, shows etc etc, and obviously contribute towards the diesal. I'd never expect someone to come miles and miles out of thier way for us, but do you think anyone locally (couple of miles) may be interested, or do people not really do this?

Please don't get me wrong i'm not trying to be cheeky or cheap lol, i'm happy paying the transport people to take us, just thought it'd be more fun with someone else and could get to more places. My boy is 4, good to box, travels well and friendly. And i am rather well behaved too!

Was just a thought, wouldn't be sure how insurance works though. Any input (please don't mock me!) x

Sounds good, but there maybe problems with insurance.
Doesn't sound sad at all, it is more fun when you go to these things with friends.
I know how frustrating it is to have no transport, I hope you get sorted some how.

I think its a great idea, I don't have any transport but would love to be able to go out and about.

And if I did have my own transport, I'd be offering people lifts too and wouldn't mind going a few miles out the way.

I would! If my Landrover wasnt busted and my horse like the box to herself! ;)
Would it be worth asking the instructor? Or joining the local riding club. I'm presuming there is no one on your yard or nearby fields?

Obviously people might be a bit nervous 1st time, but a few good experiences and youll have a shortlist of buddies! :)
join up with another youngster might be a plan - regular lessons will be great to work together on!

Good luck and I hope something works out!

It would have to be a friendly arrangement where the driver wanted to be taking their horses and picking you up as some company. Insurance wise, the driver couldn't gain financially for doing it. I bet there would be loads of takers though, it can be hard finding company for fun rides, school hire etc.

If you are not doing this to save money but to have support and friendship/company - I would say you might have more luck seeing if you can find another person who does not have transport who might like to come out with you and share the hired transport?

I hire transport too to take my pony to shows/training etc and would like someone else to come too for company sometimes but the only issue I would have is traveling strange horses or ponies together and them trying to fight.

I agree with flame and SO1 - you might have more luck going on the basis that it's likely someone out there will want to share transport that you both hire together

I would really be interested as I can never get transport anywhere!!

where are you located?

*thinks aloud* maybe we could sort out some sort of thread on here where people say where they want to go and where they're based and anyone who wants to share transport/who has transport can say so.....

the driver needs to have an operators liscence and to have completed and passed a driver/groom course thing (cant remember what its called) to accept payment. However, so long as you dont advertise the monetary arrangements and if ever stopped 'you dont pay anything and your friend doesnt charge/accept anything' there is not a lot anyone can do.

If you transport someone elses horse for financial gain then technically it is "hire and reward" and you would need an operators licence and hire and reward cover on your insurance policy and the vehicle taxed accordingly. However, if someone gives you a lift for no financial gain then that is OK. However, lets be honest some people will give lifts to people they know going to same place in return for a modest fee £10 (on the quiet of course!!)

Many thanks for all your replies. Yes I was really unsure how things would stand on the insurance front, and would hate to get anyone in trouble etc, although I know that bunging a friend a tenner after a lift is more then common place! I'm based in Lancashire if anyone ever wants to share! I'm not asking to save money, it's nice to have someone else to ride with and what not, my boy is a friendly soul too. Many thanks again xx
