Giving my total novice O/H a lesson today!!!

So when i first got a horse, last november, after a few years of not having one due to college and work, (im only 23, he is 32) he was nervy and un sure around them, fair enough she was a 4 year old nutcase given away for free, however yesterday i was schooling her and up he pipes with "can i have a go?" on he hopped for a couple of goes around paddock, then hopped off and went to make her feed while i cooled her down properly, this morning he woke me up saying "can i come to yard with you today, i wanna ride again, i cant get back to sleep" then it rained, and he proceeded to moan he wouldnt be able to ride, now the sun is out, he is digging out old trainers, and trackie bottoms to come have a little ride! I think he has been bitten by the horsey bug!
 
i know! i said should i book some lessons with YO, who runs a mini riding school at yard, and he said would i do a few lessons with him first so he doesnt feel so self concious, but my mare is now just 5, and he's seen me have some nasty falls while breaking her, and her have some real hum dinger fits / temper tantrums!

He did say "would i need many lessons if i just got an old ploddy horse like that cream coloured one at yard" (he ment the palamino) as he'd only want to come hacking with me, or plod around the school, so fingers crossed today goes well and she's not got her fizzy head on!
 
Hiii.... ok so today went very well, he insisted on not being led, and rode around school, the asked if i would walk next to them down the track to the woods, all was good, he seems to have a natural seat, he then how do u make her run but not fast, he meant trot, he enjoyed it, although couldnt get the idea or how to rise much, luckily leigha was fine as she felt lazy today so just kinda did a fast walk/slow trot, he then poo picked the field, while i did a few bits with her :-)
 
i know saved me a job!! i did find the numnah n girth in car on way home, he said they looked a bit hairy n could do with a wash, either he is genuinely interested or he wants something lol!
 
I learnt to ride as an adult and could get rising trot at all. Eventually someone told me to think "Baked Beans, Baked Beans.." in time with the movement - sounds really stupid but it really helped me!!

Your OH definitely sounds keen - just wish I could get mine interested!!
 
So went to feed leigha tonight after work, with the OH, as it was raining and hate he picked me up from work, he went off to get her in, while i made up feed, i turn round, and there he is bare back riding me 5 year old back across the yard, im starting to wonder if he been having secret lessons........

PMSL He has definitely got the bug :D Luckily your 5 yr old seems to realise that he probably needs a bit of looking after ;)
 
the 'Up' 'Down' technique is a good, simple one to teach rising trot, as is the '1' '2' technique. If hes unsteady you could always give him a neck strap or get him to hold the saddle with one hand just whilst he finds his balance
 
Oh dear... This is how i started. Fixing the 'lectrics in wife's YO's horsebox. Mind if I have a go on a horse? and don't tell the wife i have...

:D oh that is soooo true. Own a red ex-racer now :eek: Bedbug says she's so proud... hmmm :rolleyes:
