*warning- slightly gory pics at end of thread*

Hello!
I haven't posted on here for ages, and lots of things have changed!
I moved from the west midlands to the north east last year and brought Gizmo with me. We are on a lovely livery yard with excellent facilities- it took Giz a long time to adjust as she was so used to living at home on a quiet yard with 2 other horses! She is now living out 24/7 which has totally changed her from a stressy horse who never settles to the most chilled out (but slightly podgy!!) horse ever!!
Having a school has really improved our flatwork, and I get weekly jumping lessons which has improved us both so much.
We have had some bad luck at events- at Warwick Hall BE we had a 30.5 dressage, clear sj and clear xc- or so I thought, until I heard the commentator say I had missed out a fence and hence got eliminated! :( we then went to a PC event and got a 25 dressage, clear sj but then slipped on the flat xc (came right down onto her side) so had to retire (luckily we were both fine!). Would have won that by over 10 marks!!
we went to Belsay last weekend which went a bit better- dr not as good as she broke into canter which earnt us a 4 and brought our score down to 32.5. We then had 4 faults sj at the last fence- I saw a long one but she chipped one in! The sj course caused carnage with only 4 clears so I was still pretty happy! Then she stormed round the xc like a little pro! Now entered for the be100 at Hutton, cant wait!
Onto other news, my boyfriend bought me a lovely 4yo to play with through the summer- she is a 15.2hh appaloosa x TB, with the most laid back personality ever! She has been a total sweetheart, and I was getting on well with backing her, cantering well and she saw her first pole a few days ago which she was more interested in eating than going over!

Unfortunately everything went wrong yesterday. After 2 weeks of being turned out next to each other and getting on well, I put Gizmo in with Frankie (the newbie). I watched them for half an hour and they were happily stood grazing side by side. When I came up a few hours later I found Frankie lying flat out- not unusual, she always sleeps. As I got closer though it was soon apparent that things weren't right, and I saw her leg had been sliced open. I have no idea what happened- something must have set them off and upset them as Giz isn't a nasty horse-and wouldn't have kicked her for np reason- but she also had 2 puncture wounds high up on the inside of her leg where she must have got pierced by the fence, so god knows what happened. I instantly thought she had broken her leg.
I managed to get her up but she wouldn't weight bare at all, so I quickly ran to get my phone and called the vet. He was amazing and cancelled everything and got there in 10 minutes. The YO and another livery were amazing- I held it together well until I saw them and just burst into tears! The other livery got the stable ready for me as my YO and mum and dad (who happened to be visiting for the week!) Came back down to the field with me to wait for the vet. He gave her pain killers, supported her foot with a mould as she couldn't stretch out her tendon to put her foot down, and then bandaged it to walk slowly back to the stable.
When we finally got her in the stable the vet had a good look and could see her main tendons appeared to be intact- thank god! He then got the ultrasound scanner out which indicated that all the tendons and ligaments had escaped damage, and just picked up what could either have been debris or bone fragments from her splint bone.
He flushed it out and bandaged it up, applied something to granualise(?!) The wound to speed up healing and is coming back on Thurs for a second scan.
Best case scenario is that its just the wound, which will take approx 4 months box rest to fix. We are keeping our fingers tightly crossed.
Poor girl. She was so quiet throughout the whole episode, vet was shocked she is only 4. She has settled very well and this morning was lying down- got straight up looking bright eyed, and was putting some weight on her leg so all good news. She wont eat her food with the bute/antibs in so we are having to mix that into a paste and syringe it in- not sure how much longer she will tolerate me doing that to her!
I feel so utterly guilty. They were fine next to each other, why did I have to put them in together?! :( I was so shaken for the rest of the day, I genuinely thought she would have to be PTS and had phoned my OH to get his permission as she is technically his horse. She appears to have been very lucky.
Some pics of Frankie before the accident-

and pics of her wound after being cleaned up:

if anyone has any positive stories of similar injuries, please share! :(

Oh my goodness - what a horrible injury, poor girly! I wish her a very very speedy recovery. My mare Jam had a horrible flesh injury back in March and it is so amazing how quickly the body heals - I'm sure Frankie will be back up and running sooner than you think. Fingers crossed for you!

I'm so pleased Gizmo is being wonderful - I absolutely love her!

Frankie is very pretty and I don't think you should beat yourself up for her getting hurt - horses will be horses and in theory they should have been happier turned out together than kept seperately. I don't have any personal experience with that kind of injury but I'm sure there will be some positive stories to encourage you.

I have recently started my horse on fast fibre and it's fab for getting them to eat supplements and byte, usually my horse turns her nose up at her feed and I end up hand feeding her half of it but since I've started her and the other horse on fast fibre they've both literally been licking the bowl clean!

Poor little thing, my boy got tangled in a cut piece of barb wire and had a large piece of skin taken off his back leg (on the front of it), 3 and a half months of a full leg bandage being changed every 5 days and a skin graft and he was fine, vet used manuka honey to help it heal quicker too :)

Crikey she did a good job, but brilliant news that nothing important was damaged.

I would imagine that it will heal pretty well from it's placement, when it's on a joint it's a nightmare. One of my mares had a horrific injury, much much worse than your mare, and recovered just fine. Once the dressings were off I use Equiaide, a clay type product that promotes healing and stops the tissue granulating. Keep positive I am sure she will be fine.

Ouch! Don't beat yourself up, could happen to any horses turned out together even if they have been together years. I have to feed supplement and the only things that works is to add it to feed night before with a bit of molasses water (drop of molasses mixed with water before putting on feed) by the morning feed has expanded (I just use handful chaff and handful topspec lite) and they wolf it down. I tried all other variants, apple juice, mint, garlic with no luck.

Fingers crossed it is just superficial.

Thanks everyone. Its so hard not to blame myself- but whenever I turned them out they would trot over to each other and graze next to each other so I really thought they'd be fine :(
luckily Gizmo is totally unscathed. Although she is insured- Frankie isn't. Massive lesson to be learnt- insure your horse before you've even brought it home!!! Luckily vet is being very kind with trying to keep costs down for us, and after the initial few visits will be basically handing all the dressing changes etc down to me with just occasional visits. She was meant to be a quick project to sell on before winter but looks like she is staying for a lot longer now! Luckily she is just the nicest natured horse I have EVER met so I'm not too gutted to keep her! Vet seems pretty optimistic that she will come 100% eventually, as even if the splint bone is chipped its not that serious, will just be a longer road to recovery.
I have tried using molasses to mix her meds in but shes just not fussed. A livery suggested mixing it with jam and feeding from my hand so may try that, but for now she is swallowing it all with the syringe.
We had a new livery arrive yesterday 2 stables down from her who is also on box rest following colic surgery, so at least she has company, and its a very busy yard so lots for her to watch. Off to ride the thug and cuddle my cripple now!!!

Gizmo is awesome. Poor Frankie glad to hear she is so chilled about box rest. My old horse had an accident as a yearling and was caught in barbed wire. I looked after him after the accident (he wasn't mine then) and didn't see the wound until the first dressing change, but it was much worse. Picture multiple cuts bisecting down the inside of his leg. There was no damage to the underlying structures and although he was left with a pretty impressive set of scars he was never lame and competed up to 1m40. He was not quite so chilled about box rest though and was a nightmare. It is amazing how quickly they heal.

Gosh, lots going off at your end! Frankie looks lovely, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
Gizmo sounds like she's doing really well, those are some great drsg scores :)
Did you manage to sell that lovely connie type in the end?

OMG you poor thing! Fingers crossed it heals well and she makes a quick recovery! Re disguisuing meds I found a good slug of cheap apple juice hides the taste well. Healing vibes to you all in the meantime! x

Ouchie! Reading the initial part of the OP had me feeling quite sick so I am very pleased for you that it is not more serious, but I am hoping that it is the best case scenario and you'll have him fit and well again soon bless him.

ah yes, Aoife went to the best home I could have asked for, and is giving a nervous 10 year old heaps of fun and confidence- I have seen her a few times since she went as she moved up to Scotland, only about 1.5hrs from me! :)

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes- keeping fingers crossed for second scan on Thursday!!

Ah that's good to hear, she seemed very sweet :) All the best for Thursday.

Good luck. Our girl had a horrendous kick jan 2013 right on her point of hock & the vets would not confirm that she would ever fully recover, BUT, 2 weeks ago she went to her first jumping clinic since her accident & you cannot tell from her movement that she ever had anything wrong. It was a long slog for us as the joint was involved, I'm sure yours will heal much quicker. Hugs ((())) & don't blame yourself. :)
