after reading another thread on here i phoned to check i have third party insurance - which i do thankfully.

i also put my youngsters value UP as he has been backed now, just happened to mention that hea doing a lot more would be hunting etc and told i am not insured in that bracket! phew so added on now.

does anyone.not insure for hunting but still go?

I'll probably be told off but I hunt without insurance. Always have. I would say that of the 30ish horses that follow our small pack, maybe 2 or 3 people insure?

But then we are just a bunch of farmers tearing around each others fields!

You don't have to insure for all the activities you do as long as you are happy for the fact that, should you try and claim for an injury or death of the horse and this is in any way related to hunting (be it just travelling in the trailer to and from a hunt to actualy sustaining an injury on a hunt), the insurance company are within their rights to turn down a claim if you were not insured to take part in that activity. You don't HAVE to insure for anything at all but then you have to be prepared to foot the bill should something go wrong.

Most hunts require you to be a member of the countryside alliance - which includes insurance for on the hunting field. It doesn't cover you for travelling / hacking to and from meets though. I make sure I have group 3 insurance for mine anyway, as well as CA and BHS cover which is included with my memberships.

I wouldn't increase the cover for hunting until you were actually planning to go, otherwise you're paying extra premium for no reason. Some companies will allow you to increase the cover on a temporary basis without charging you additional premium. So if you wanted to try hunting just the once, if you tell them the date you are going they can extend the cover for that one day at no extra cost. Obviously call your company to confirm they will do this - don't just assume!
