I thought he rode very nicely: his horse wasn't as overbent as some, and went well for him. He sat quietly and wasn't heavy handed. He was sooo delighted it was hard not to be pleased for him

On the other hand, I would have liked anyone but Robert W to win. I didn't like the way as the pressure increased so did his equipment; or the way (I'm almost certain) I saw him leathering the horse on the way into the arena.

William should certainly give Robert and Louise W a few tips on how to ride properly

William is going to be simply outstanding when he reaches his 20's! he has the litheness, athleticsm and suppleness that so few riders have- similar to that of Rodrigo Pessoa, Ludger Beerbaum.

Robert W has a face like a well slapped a**e and I always like to see him and Ellen (1001 excuses for a poor performance) taken down a peg.

WIlliam shows more natural talent and might just kick their arses for the next 40 years...

i think he is a lovely rider - so efficient and looks effortless with him. something we could all aspire to - however i think it probably comes a wee bit more naturally than most of us!

still i can but dream

We can but hope! Also that this win doesn't go to his head and he turns as wooden headed as the other W's though he sounded sensible enough in the interview!
grin.gif
He's certainly a lot better to look at and he did ride very nicely; more talent in his little finger than the whole of me could ever have.

Makes you sick sometimes, doesn't it?!

Funny you should say that, I was thinking of a very young Franke Sloothak!
cool.gif

He has joined my list of rider gods alongsides Toddy, Harry Meade and Lucinda G!!
How cool, to sit so quiet and still all the way into the bottom of that wall!
cool.gif

The mere fact is, when the chips were down young Robert is not as cool under pressure as William, Robert threw the horse at the wall from the last 2 strides, and f***ed up big time. Where as William sat quietly and let the horse get to the bottom, he had the trust and/or the judgement to know the horse would do it!

I couldnt understand why robert was getting so many cheers! I dont know ANY R fans! (and would it have hurt him to crack a smile for the crown who cheered for him??? )

William rode beautifully, and I found it interesting that he managed to get through with the horse that people where saying may not have enough scope, and made it look so easy.. I thought that robert and his horse both lacked in confidence, maybe will should get on and show him how its done!

The horse didn't appear to have that much scope in my opinion... but it did really try for him, and he just came to the fence with no pressure yet a really good canter i thought? reminded me of the way Ben Maher rides?

A broad statement here, but the showjumpers that seem to be doing better at the moment are the ones that just leave the front end alone and keep their leg on (but still maintain the quality of canter and rhythm etc.) as opposed to the ones that are overbent but appear to have a more powerful canter (i suppose thats generally the older riders!)

Also if anyone watched the young riders yesterday morning I thought Daniel Neilson rode amazingly. Definitely deserved to win. Both Daniel and Will seem to just have a really laid back-no pressure style to their riding which i think is really nice to see! anddddd they both have decent lower legs
wink.gif
that dont seem to bring the saddlecloth up (unlike ellen

but hardly ANY of the whittakers are media savvy and play the crowd like some others.
Robert did give everyone a wave etc, maybe that wasnt shown on tv

William is a fantastic rider he deserved to win so much and his face was a picture. what a fantastic win for such a young rider and such an important show

i don't have any reason to slag off robert whittaker like many seem to be doing - i abide by one rule, if you wont get on and do it yourself you shouldnt pass judgement !! and i'm sure most people aren't about to jump on and show him how its done over a 7ft puissance wall ??

What a cool head on young shoulders to sit and wait for that enormous fence.V impressive riding.
Please can someone slip Oki Doki in my stocking for Christmas.

Quite agree. William rode beautifully and deserved to win, but anyone who had a go gets my admiration.

At the risk of getting shot down, my horse has had a smack from time to time going into the arena when he's not paying attention to me or got his mind on the job. I don't think its fair to comment on someone giving their horse one smack when you don't know why he's done it.

Sorry - I've already asked for him. My OH hasn't said I can't have him so I assume he will be here on Xmas morning

I thoroughly enjoyed watching him jump in the Puissance. That little horse had a proper, proper good jump in him. Such a neat bundle of springs. hehehehe.
Very well ridden too. Imagine having that good quality seat, hands etc with a cool, calm competitive manner so young. He is going to be one of our future greats.
Loved it.

I'm a Robert Whittaker fan. Finbar is gorgeous but he sure isn't easy and Robert's had loads of success with him. Yes he tried a new tactic of smacking the horse
just before take-off, it didn't work. Hopefully he'll now not try it again. Everyone's allowed to try something new if they suspect it may help. I still think he does a good job on that horse but I will be watching out for any whipping on the way in because that wouldn't be nice. Also I'll just add that, yep William deserved to win and he is a really lovely jockey.

On Thursday nights programme on freeview when Geoff Billington was doing the commentary he said William Whittaker was, in his opinion, one of the best young riders around. Some of his other comments about riders were hilarious, you could hear him in the background last night,he was obviusly doing the commentary at Olympia.

I agree. I thought William was absolutely fantastic - reminded me of John.

I have never ever thought Robert W. was a good rider, I think he is far too handy and gets away with it because he gets very good horses. Nowhere near the ability of William, or the elder Whitakers IMO.

John on pepper mill was FANTASTIC tonight I thought.... he's got to be one of the best riders ever I think, he so natural and everything looks so easy! Rob reminds me of how Micheal rides - a bit s*it or bust...

I was please the girls kicked ass tonight though!!
