Glamorgan Hunt

Well having moved Ed from one side of the area to another I'm now smack bang in Glamorgan country :) it'll be my first time hunting, so wondering what kind of hunt it is, what kind of jumping they do, and if they are friendly ;)

They've always been friendly when I've been out with them. And they do like their jumping - but there is usually a way around. They have got some nice country too.

Phone the Secratary, she's lovely, and ask her what days would be good to go out on for a quieter, non terrifying introduction.

Cool :) Thanks AM, the more jumping the better but would like to go out on a day when I can be close to home as he's not fit enough for a full day yet. :D

Amymay, you clearly love Tolly and Toby. How do you feel when the pack tears through someone's garden and kills their pet cat?

I cannot stand people who feel the need to push their viewpoint onto others, especially when they can't do so in any kind of constructive way.

I'm yet to meet any cat that couldn't outwit a dog, especially when there's fair warning, hounds don't generally just "appear" in someones garden...

And finally - ANY dog can tear apart a cat, in fact, I believe my bitch would do so without hesitation. Should we blanket ban pet dogs too on that basis?

Accidents happen!

I'm afraid hounds have been known to roar through gardens in my village.

The hunt does not advertise when they will be in the area. This upset a lot of horse owners last winter as our horses were turned out and wrecked their fields when the hunt passed. If even the local horse owners are surprised by arrival of the hunt, how is a cat owner who has gone to work supposed to protect their cat.

If hounds came into my garden or paddock and injured any of my pets, it would be treated as negligence and trespass rather than an accident.

If I do hear (note - not always possible with double glazing) hounds or horns, all the animals get shut in as a precaution. But hunt does not have permission to enter my land - so I do not expect them to do so.

Yes, I know. That's why I was particularly annoyed last winter.

I am on the hunt notification list, but didn't hear anything.

The hunt as you described it - really boils down to animals in this case - how exactly do you explain to an animal (ie hounds) the laws of trespass?

The hunt have cards available - I am NEVER suprised by the hunt - and would expect any self respecting horse owner to have the savvy enough not to be either.

Your cat you'll be suprised to know, can look after itself without needing to be shut in. I had a cat once, and a cat-killer dog. I didn't feel the need to hide the cat from the dog, the cat had enough survival instincts and common sense to stay out of reach from the dog, which is quite easy when you can climb, and the dog cant...

To be fair Kitty, the huntsman should be in full control of his hounds at all time. And it is the one thing that is guaranteed to give hunts a bad name, ie loss of control and damage to property.

I've seen the repercussions of hounds killing a cat - it was not pleasant, nor should it be. And even as a supporter, I would be angry, upset and demanding recompense.

Oh agreed, but what I'm thinking is, say the hounds are following a scent down a street - how long could it take for a hound to veer off and into a garden? Split seconds? And then for the huntsman to call them back - or however they gain control! That's all it takes really for a hound to catch a cat, which is why I agree all measures should be taken - but unless a hunt is actually running gun-ho through gardens - can't people chalk it up to an accident.

That's no belittling the loss someone would feel, but I do worry that people do seem to be all about blame and wanting to scapegoat someone - when sometimes, bad things happen even with the best will in the world.
