Glasgow people - advice needed re livery

Hi everyone

Long time lurker, first time poster here (will do brief intro in a minute).

Later in the year, we will probably need to move yards, for a combination of reasons (cost, change in needs, moving house). However as a lot of yards have waiting lists now, I am wanting to decide soon so I can get my name down if they have a queue.

I will still be living in the Glasgow area, most likely to be either Ibrox/Mosspark or Dennistoun/Tollcross, so fairly close to a motorway.

I'm looking for assisted DIY/par-livery or possibly full livery if it's not expensive (unlikely, I know), reasonable turnout in winter (difficult to find, but I would want at least 6 hours in all but the worst weather, ideally more). a decent school (ideally indoor and outdoor), and a decent size of box (my pony is 14hh so shouldn't be too hard to get). I don't mind being at a riding school. Pony has had laminitis in the past, so a yard that has poor grazing/fatties field would be brilliant.

I've ruled out Blackfaulds, Tannoch, Foreside and Hazelden for various reasons.
Wardhouse is a possible, but not ideal.

Shortlist is Dumbreck (really close), Fordbank, West Carsfield Farm and Meadowhead Farm (although it's quite far out).

Lawmarnock I know nothing about, but would be interested in finding out more.
Langton Lea I know nothing about, but might be a possibility.

I can drive, so I don't need to worry about it being accessibleby public transport. Any feedback on my shortlist or Langton Lea would be great (but if it's something quite negative, please PM me so it doesn't cause any problems).

Used to work at one of the yard you have discounted. :) My girl lives just down the road with my cuz (but she's all out of space).
West Carswell farm is lovely. There's also a yard called Netherton Farm (just out side Barrhead, it's next to the railway line and turn out looks good at least).
Sadly I can only talk about the Neilston/Barrhead area. I don't get out much. :D
 
Lawmarnock seems to get a good name, there's also Wardhouse just down the road but I don't know what they offer in terms of livery now. I do know someone in Kilmacolm (if it wasn't too far for you) who was looking to take a few liveries and would imagine they would give top class care but don't know any details or if they've filled spaces (would be a very small quiet yard). I could find out if the others aren't suitable.
 
Don't think you would get much turn out at Dumbreck.
Maidenhill at Newton Mearns is lovely - we have our riding club showing show there.
West Kype has a lovely indoor but is probably too far out for you as its beyond Strathaven.
You could also have a look at Mid Drumloch and South Cathkin Farm.
 
Was also going to suggest maidenhill, but I think they always have a wait list. There's Thornhill stables on the back road between Newton Mearns & Stewarton, although they were full at the start of winter.

If you could that would be great, thanks Emilieu. Anything they could tell me would be helpful - always prefer to hear from liveries, see if what the yard says is true!

Out of the 4 discounted, I have been on 2, been warned against 1 by several people, and 1 is too expensive.

I am glad to hear West Carswell is lovely, it looks good on the website. It is a bit more driving, but I am tempted. I wasn't aware of Netherton Farm, what can you tell me about it?

Thornhill is where I would put Arnie if he ever had to go into livery. The staff there are great and there is a really good atmosphere at the yard. West Carswell also looks good.

I go to Lawmarnock regularly for RC things and its a lovely yard and the people seem nice :)

Wardhouse do DIY up to full, but due to field location it's not ideal (from parent health and safety angle - I would need to be full livery if I moved there I think).

I wish I was nearer Kilmacolm, Gryffeside looks ideal. it would be a lot of extra petrol for me though.

I like the idea of Lawmarnock as I think riding club things get held there, so I would be able to join in with no transport!

I wasn't aware of Maidenhill, thanks I will have a look. I thought Mid Drumloch only did DIY, will check.

Thornhill looks amazing, two girls from my yard moved there and love it. I am not sure I can afford it though, as it's one of more expensive yards and far out.

I do like the idea of Lawmarnock, currently I can't join in any RC events as no transport. I definitely need to find out more.

WCF just looks lovely, countryside looks amazing!

I've got 2 at Thornhill and it's brilliant. Funnily enough it doesn't work out that expensive because everything is included! :) Think it's full though. Always a good sign if there is a waiting list.

Mid Drumloch is only DIY although they do offer grass livery all year round so if your horses will live out then it might work for you and the owners will bring in/turn out for you if needed - that's what one of my friends does. She lives a good 15+ miles from there but seems to manage fine.
 
Arnie and I are off to Thornhill for a lesson just now - I would love to move him there but I think hubby might object seeing as how I have my own place :D
 
My yard near Larkhall may have a space available in about two weeks' time. They do part and full livery. It's a lovely wee yard. I used to commute there from the West End and it would take me about half an hour. They are pretty flexible and "horse centred" and it seemed as a few of the other yards mentioned, when I visited them, would not suit my neurotic horse.

Cao Ila - could you tell me a little bit about your yard, either pm or on the thread? Although I can't move any time soon, Larkhall wouldn't be too bad now the M74 is there.

It's nice and quiet. The hacking is all right and it has an all-weather floodlit outdoor arena, which really is all weather. It was the only one in the area that wasn't frozen last month. He opens up the cross-country course and a field for riding over the summer, which are good fun. All the horses are kept to a strict routine, which is important to me since my horse has a nervous breakdown at those yards where everyone is doing different things at different times.
 
Southburn looks good, if I am staying in the east end of town it's a definite possibility.

Does anyone know anything about Langton Lea at all? All I could find was a social network page which didn't really tell me anything.

Dumbreck apparently has very limited turnout even in summer, so that's not really an option. I don't mind being a bit limited part of the year, but all year round is a big no.

I've just worked out the mileages for round trips to the different yards, including work, from the 2 areas we are strongly considering moving to. Interestingly, Gryffeside is roughly the same mileage from one of the possible areas, as my current round trip to the current yard is! So it's back on the list of possibles, which is good as it looks like it would suit us well.

Worst bit about yard hunting is choosing what you are willing to compromise on, as nowhere is perfect. Living in the city, distance is already a bit of a compromise, but the further option is there as to whether it's a closer yard (possibly not as good a match to needs) or further away (better match, more petrol and time cost). And then there's things like do I want to be on a yard that's close to existing friends, close to riding club activities, and what would I compromise on to get that? Will hopefully be easier to decide once I've visited the various yards, although I think I've eliminated 2 possibles on a basis of distance already (30 mile round trip just to the yard is more than I am happy with).
 
I work in the city centre, and it takes me 20 mins to get to Southburn :) Just pop right onto the M74, and your there! shooty in!

I really must say, its wonderful there. I just moved in there in November, after being recommended also by Caol Ila.

The Yo's are wonderful, the place is relaxed and the horses all are happy and healthy. The arena is great to do some real work in, and the people are super friendly.

Id highly recommend giving the YO and call, and coming out to have look :)
