Why not use the voice? Why do we get penalized for this? Stephen Clarke said because the Judges want to know the horse is reacting to the riders other aids...... but why cannot the voice be an aid too even in competition??????? Thoughts???
I absolutely think that the voice is an aid and should be permitted - a horse is not born knowing voice aids, they have to be trained to react to them!
Good on ya Weezy!!! I think so too, even though I know we use the voice in the beginning and then use other aids, I do not think the voice should be penalized. My horse reacts to my voice all the time..... be it soft or harsh to repremand!!!
I read it and thought it was rather inetersting. I don't think the voice should be allowed because it would be difficult to draw the line? I do use the voice to train and even sometimes in competition (and sometimes get penalised). Originally you wouldn't want to use your voice as it would be useless on the battle field, but that is obviously irrelevant now! However if you did allow it would we be in danger of people doing the whole test talking to their horse, hardly a dignified picture?
There was also a bit about riders not wanting mounted prize givings and applauding as it upset the horses, how ridiculous is this in a sport which is supposed to represent the uttmost training of the horse
Totally agree, never understood it myself. Mind you I have a terrible terrible habit of clicking. I kept doing it in my jumping lesson last night and my instructor said 'Oh god the Woodpeckers are out'
I know some riders do use the voice but very quietly like a sshhhhh before lengthening or ah before a halt.Just no one notices because it is a whisper , a secret between them and their horse.
I also have a click habit, it is a habit I got from a long distant instructor, not good in practice area
I know, not wanting a prize giving! Tut!! Nothing better than that!! Why do they not teach this at home.... ie.... like police horses etc... come on......prize giving is the ultimate...... I have seen many horses go "ape" at applauding but surely this should be something trained at home if you know you are going to be in the top?? Even if it is a tape recording??? People want to applaud you, not feel they have to be quiet
Yes Carthorse, I have know many to "whispher too"!! or quietly encourage by a "sound" undetected..... why not eh??! I use to "cluck" like a chicken on many an occasion!!
I haven't got the magazine with me but one chap was saying that Dressage is it's own worst enemy as far as marketing is concerned due to riders not liking prize givings, applause etc.
I have to admit being new to the BD world it is almost as if you are at a funeral when anywhere near the arenas. Tense atmosphere's and a stony silence.
I would be happy to hear people chatting and laughing during my tests. I would also love someone to applaud me. PMSL!! Prize givings? Fancy not wanting to have your moment of glory!
When I took along a friend of a friend I had trouble explaining why everything was so very quiet and serious as I really couldn't see the need either.
I thought it was an interesting article. I would love to have read more.
The part about training methods was interesting too.
its all very well teaching something at home, but horses react differently in different environments.
Ive had people standing by my arena at home making loads of noise, putting umbrellas up and down, clapping etc and Archie dosent bat an eyelid. However people clapping when he is out competing send him mad, nothing i can do about, its just something he has to get used to when hes out now aswell.

Absolutely and good on you for having that attitude! One reason I have been taking Herbie to Woodingtons for Dressage is that everyone parks and loads/unloads around the arena so very busy as you do your test. It does mean I loose a few marks because he's not 100% concentrating but I want a horse that just gets used to going out and doing a job regardless of distractions.
I definately think its good for horses to have things going on around them when competing, as otherwise what happens when you get to big events? You can ask people to sit still whilst you are riding incase they scare your horse!!!!!

Although I was at Fontainbleau watching the eventing in the rain a few years back and one rider did just that - rode along the spectator bank and asked us all to put down our umberellas and be quiet during his test!
