Hi everyone - my first thread so please be gentle! ;)

As a very hairy trad cob owner I am on the constant look out for anything that will help the forever battle against the dreaded mites!

My boy had yet another dectomax yesterday and the vet said "have you considered clipping his feather?" to which I replied that I would rather boil my head! However I'm getting to the point where I think it might have to happen just to get to the blighters once and for all (clip that is not boiling my head).

Whilst in a tack shop today I noticed foot stamp. Has anyone ever used it? what sort of results?

Just wanted to say that many may tell you that you will have to clip your cob's feathers to deal with mites, but having tried both clipped and feathered legs on my boy, I can say there has been no difference in terms of his 'sore bits'. I have tried all sorts of things to solve this problem, and I think you will find that sometimes things work and sometimes they don't, even on the same horse. Last winter I had good results washing each sore patch with Hibiscrub and then covering with Sudocrem. In the past, i had good results using the Camrosa range of products (only available on the net) but in recent years (I've had him for 14 years) they seem to have become too strong for him.
I looked at Foot Stamp, but noticed that there is some toxicity mentioned in the detail, so this is out for me as Seb chews his feathers when scratching his sore bits. He only has one or two on each hind foot, but they have been the bane of our lives!

my horse has suffered this for years iv tried everything last resort just started useing this i dont know if im doing it right but this is what im doing foot stamp one day not rinsed hibiscrub next day then foot stamp next day then next day hibiscrub the next do this two weeks seems to work for a couple of months then do it all again
 
Hi Head-Boiler and welcome to the Forum. My veteran, hedge-destroying, fence-trashing, feed-stealing, feed-bag-opening, should-know-better, Section D gets feather mites too. As tempted as I am to say serves him right, they do drive him nuts. He has the double dectomax injection 10 days apart about twice a year and it keeps them in check. Be careful with Hibiscrub - it's an antiseptic rather than a feather mite zapper so will help with any sore patches but won't get rid of the mites. Dilute it well if you're going to leave it in. Be carful with Camrosa too - personal decision I know but there's too much "unmentioned" toxicity for my liking. Ditto Foot Stamp. I looked into it but if you read the details on their web page you'll see it has to be used with great care and (if memory serves) there's all sorts of no-nos like doing it in strong sunshine etc etc.

If you do a search on this Forum for threads with "pig oil and sulphur" in, you'll find many, many people who swear by this, and as a spin off it keeps feathers in fab condition. Never tried it myself because, ha ha, I thought the pig oil came from pigs and I had this awful vision of my horse wandering round the fields in hot sun, stinking of bacon and with a cloud of 10,000,000 bluebottles thick round his feet! Another, easier thing to try is Frontline spray. Any petshop or over the counter at your small animal vets. Ask for dog strength, not cat. Zaps the mites as long as your ned will stand patiently while you rub it deep into the feathers until it gets down to skin level. Wear rubber gloves. And don't forget, whatever method you try, you have to repeat it in 10 - 14 days as the products don't affect the unhatched eggs. Adults get killed, eggs hatch in 10 days, ned re-infested in 14 days!!! Good luck and WE NEED PICS OF YOUR NED!!!!!!

I use pig oil and sulphur and like I said he has dectomax. Was going to try frontline and then saw this foot stamp stuff so thought I'd ask.

Think I'll stick to the frontline!

You can buy dectomax as a topical solution for cows but not sure if it's a good idea.
 
ever thought of diatom powder? its for mites in chickens but is safe for horses, owning tb's leg mites has never been a problem but it seems like a good (and cheap) method if it works.

I used frontline on my mare last year, applied 10 days apart, then used pig oil and sulphur all winter and have had no further mite problems at all. Will use pig oil and sulphur again this winter on my two hairy beasts.
 
i work in a shop which sells diatom and the label says safe for horses (as well as dogs, cats etc) so i would say it is, if it can safely be used on food for human consumption i would say it is safe.
 
Thanks LadyR, my sister keeps chickens and apparently has some (who knew?) - going to give it a try, might even try sprinkling on his bed to see it helps prevent them coming from the straw, will keep everyone posted x
 
Hi, I am new to the Forum also, saw your post re: mites. my heavy feathered cob had mites a few years ago. My Vet recommended Benzyl Benzoate. You have to get through the feathers to the skin and apply EVERY day for 28 days due to the life cycle of the mites. It worked and they never came back.
 
I have had the same problem for the last year with my two. I had the vet out to give my two the injection has I had tried everything. I had to cut one of the horses feathers all off to get into the sores. She started to bleed & it was hard to get to the sores while the feather was on. The other one was fine & I didn't need to cut hers off. The 10 days are nearly up & they are both stamping their back legs like mad, BUT not biting them (yet). I asked the vet about the pig oil & she said not to use it. It makes them all greasy & doen't kill the mites. I had ordered some of the net & cancelled the order after she said that.
The vet did say to me to try, surgical spirits & liquid paraffin. You have to have 50% of each mixed together & apply it to their legs. The vet said she was treating a horse for a while & it got so bad nothing worked & the lady was going to have her horse PTS, then someone told the lady who owned the horse to use this on the feathers. The vet said it was amazing & she uses it on her horses now. I have to wait though until after the second injection before I try it on my two.
I do feel for you, it is a nightmare to see your horse stamping all the time & know they have sores. They must feel so down. I thought to myself the other day. It must be like having nits running all over your head & not being able to get rip of them O_0 Nasty.
