I need to give my pony some joint supplement either Equine America's supplement or Equiflex. Anyone tried either of these. Any recommendation/advice appreciated.
Check the labels. You need at least 10g glucosamine hydrochloride per day for a 500kg horse (you will have to work this out pro rata for your ponys weight). Glucosmaine HCL in conjunction with chondroitin sulphate is better than glucosamine on its own. You need 4g CS per day for a horse.
Most products dont have anywhere near this amount so you wll be wasting your money if not feeding sufficient active ingredients
Glucosamine is brillient stuff - I take myself for my arthritis and it helps a great deal.
Add to your feed a cup of fresh ground Linseed daily - the Omega oils are excellent for joints.
It needs to be freshly ground to be any good. I use a coffee grinder to do mine takes so little time. Bonus is that he will have a lovely shiny coat too.

To work out if 26% glucosamine was sufficient i would need the weight of the product and how much you feed each day. For example if the product was 1kg, 26% would mean 260g was glucosamine. To get 10 g glucosamine a day this would mean the product would last 26 days if you were feeding sufficient levels. So you would have to feed just under 40g per day of the produt to be getting sufficient glucosamine. If you were only feeding 20g per day, then 26% of 20 grammes is 5.2 grammes. So you would only be feeding half the required amount of glucosamine and so you would be wasting your money.
Vitamin E acts as an anti-inflammatory in conjunction with MSM and vitamin C is needed to help the absorption and effectiveness of glucosamine. So inclusion of these is a good thing. Hyaluronic acid nourishes the joint fluid, so aagin it is a good ingredient. It seems like a very high level in your supplement, a dose is usually 100mg, which has been shown to reduce joint inflammation. So 6000mg per kg product is a high level.
Joint supplements are a nightmare because it is very hard to compare them when they have different ingredients, some in g some in mg and others in %!
Many thanks! teddyt - sorry to hijack the thread Reform.
I worked out the same as you (it is a 1kg tub) - that it would only be 26 days for a 500kg horse, in spite of claims that it is for 3 months! As my horse is 380kg I could squeeze 35 days out of it but it would be an expensive way to go.
You really do need to check the labels. The majority dont have sufficient active ingredients, so you waste your money and the horse doesnt get the help it needs. Arthriaid from nutriscience is one that is good but to get 10 g glucosamine a day you need to feed at the higher dose it suggests, so one tub lasts 2 months. Its £38. Thats the best one ive found so far.
