Right, I need a good glucosmaine suppliment for my boy. he's on new market but tbh its so expensive i can't keep buying it! feel so bad, wondered if anyone had any ideas on cheaper alternative still with a high level of glucosamine in it? i've looked at cortaflex and at equine america glucosamine plus msm but not sure how good they are. All opinions welcome (also posted in new lounge)

"Forever Freedom" is a good supplement - is Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM and Aloe Vera - the Aloe Vera is supposed to help the horse's body absorb the Glucosamine more effectively. My horse has had it for years, and seems to do the trick! (can't buy it in the shops though as is through distributors - you can get it online) :)
 
Try the Aviform website. Good value as you can get a 3 for 2 deal and they do free postage. I've used them for a while now on 2 horses with good results. I moved my mare from Newmarket Supplement to Aviform and didn't find any reduction in performance, but a big reduction in cost
 
The aim of Glucosamine supplements is to 1) reduce inflammation in the joint and 2) protect and maintain the cartilage. If you are using the joint supplement for the latter reason you are unlikely to see a change in the short term so its hard to determine if the supplement is doing anything or not.
The most important criteria for selecting a joint supplement with glucosamine is to get one with a high concentration and purity of the substance - and also one which is independently verified as such. Following this criteria only a few products fit the bill - Newmarket Joint supplement and Synequin/Cosequin. Horses havea notoriously poor ability to absorb glucosamine so buying one of these "high" volume glucosamine substances that have poor purity is false economy. The cheaper joint supplements on the market are not independently verified (ie no studies have been carried out to back up their claims re contents) and there are few laws/controls in place in this country to ensure that animal nutriceuticals are of good quality.
 
Agree with Glenruby! Although must add - sadly there are few laws regulating any nutraceuticals, not just animal ones!

A massive percentage of all products tested FAIL label claim - two main reasons for this 1. a poor and uneven mix of ingredients, and 2. cutting corners with the more expensive products. A huge amount of health food store nutraceuticals dont meet label claim.

Most supplements will contain the inferior glucosamine sulphate - a man made product which has to be combined with an additional product (salt) in order to stabilize it. Glucosamine hydrochloride is a more expensive, naturally occuring substance containing up to half as much glucosamine AGAIN (!) compared molecule to molecule with G.Sulphate - slightly more expensive but you get a lot more for your money.

Chondroitin is up to five times more expensive than glucosamine hydrochloride (hence most products failing label claim will fail here). Marine and mammalian source - the marine source is cheaper and upto 2/3 LESS bioavailable and has unpredictable uptake. Mammalian chondroitin comes from sustainable sources and has a much higher bioavailability. Only high end products tend to contain this!

For true value for money, go for a trialled product with peer reviewed published results, and products that use the higher quality ingredients than the cheaper less bioavailable ingredients.

You should try to use a product that contains both glucosamine and chondroitin - studies show that the 'synergistic' effect of these products together have a much higher effect than adding together the effects of each product on its own.

another vote for aviform, i use suppleze gold on my mare recommended by my vet for her bone spavin, works great. Also use the dog version on my 11 year old dog and he is like a puppy again :)

I've just looked this up - it's a bargin compared to my current "Equine America" Glucosamine + MSM supplement £16 for 30 days !!!! £22.95 for 100 days + BOGOF and I'm not even sure the levels are right in mine ! I'm going to switch - Thank you !!
