Hi

Our vet has just put our 11year old lab on meta cam and Glucosamine but the Glucosamine is seriously expensive ... I know you can get it from health food shops for a lot less as people at the yard do it with their horses...the vet said that you would then have to guess how much to give the dog....so my question!

How do you judge how much to feed if you buy Glucosamine from the shop....

Go to a good horse food shop and buy Equine America Cortaflex. It is a joint supplement containing glucosamine. You can buy it as a syrup or tablets. You feed one tablet per day, depending on the size of your dog. It worked wonders for my whippet and my horse has it too.

Metacam is an NSAID, a bit like Ibuprofen for animals, vets often give it for arthritis problems.

I am NOT trying to over-rule your vet. But you should try Cortaflex, you may well find your dog only needs one product and you can stop the Metacam and Glucosamine.

Or better still get the same product cheaper online which is what I did - wouldnt go for Equine Cortaflex myself as they do a Canine one now

Mum went to the vet this time so when she goes for her checkup next month (dog not mum!) I will try and go and speak to the vet and ask more questions about other option and cheaper alternatives...that sound harsh i know but i feel vets in england are so expensive everything is so marked up!

if anyone does have a dog that also buys glucosamine from a health shop for humans please let me know...and also let me know how you decided on the dosage!

i dont like that the dogs are getting old now

I have just looked on that website for products prescribed by vet two days ago. One for his skin cost me £40 at vets. On website, £13.74! I'm fuming. Yes they've got more overheads. But even so.
Vet UK must be making a profit even with their much lower prices. So how much is vet making?

I had my dog (who has elbow dyslpasia) on cortaflex (canine), about £25 for 60 tablets, one a day.

I now have him on Glycoflex which is about £22 for 90 tablets.

On chatting with last vet who was very into "natural remedies" I bought from Holland & Barrett fish oil capsules (he has one a day), I was going to get him cod liver oil but I remember reading something about too much Vit A and turmeric (one capsule a day) which is an anti inflammatory. I am hoping the oils & the anti inflammatory plus the gluscosamine is helping together with the bone & cartilage (sp)?

Yep it was exactly the same for me - I got EXACTLY the same product from the website at 40% less than the vet charged me! I helpfully told the vet this, they were cool about prescribing me stuff then letting me get it online instead though

Their service is excellent, the stuff ALWAYS comes next day, and they are really helpful

Hi vets put my dog on both meta cam and glucosamine. The way i worked it out was to have her weighed and then bought the lowest dose at the herbalist and gave one at morning and one at night.

She is a lab weighs 29kg....

we got ripped off at the vets with ear cleaning stuff, worming for the dogs cat etc....frontline for of them...blahblah!

I didn't mean to give the dog the Equine Version of Cortaflex. The company name is Equine America, they do cat, dog, horse and human versions of Cortaflex.
